Stephen Wachira Karani is a Kenyan politician and the current Member of Parliament for Laikipia West Constituency under the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Early Life & Education
Stephen Wachira Karani was born and raised in Laikipia West Constituency, Laikipia County. He began his education at Kiamaina Primary School from 1969 to 1976, where he completed his Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
In 1977, he joined Kianyaga High School for his secondary studies and graduated in 1980 with his Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE).
Karani advanced to Kagumo High School between 1980 and 1982, where he obtained his Kenya Advanced Certificate of Education (KACE).
He later enrolled at the University of Nairobi in 1984, graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Veterinary Medicine (BVM).
Career
Professional career
Upon graduating, Karani joined the Ministry of Livestock Development as a Senior Veterinary Officer, serving from 1988 to 1994.
After leaving government service, he ventured into the private sector, working as a self-employed veterinary and agricultural consultant between 1995 and 2013.

During this period, he engaged with local communities, offering expertise in livestock health management and supporting small-scale farmers to enhance their productivity and income.
Political Career
Stephen Wachira Karani entered politics in 2013, successfully contesting the Laikipia West parliamentary seat under The National Alliance (TNA) party during that year’s General Election.
His first term focused on infrastructure development, agricultural support, and improving access to education and healthcare in his constituency.
In the 2017 General Election, Karani lost his seat to Patrick Mariru but remained active in local development initiatives and constituency matters.
Ahead of the 2022 General Election, Karani aligned himself with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Running on the UDA ticket, he reclaimed the seat with an overwhelming 42,172 votes, defeating Sarolyne Wanjiku Mwendia of Jubilee Party, who garnered 12,875 votes.
Following his re-election, Karani was elected unopposed in November 2022 as the Chairperson of the Departmental Committee on Members’ Services and Facilities in the National Assembly.
In this capacity, he oversees the welfare and support services provided to Members of Parliament, ensuring the smooth running of parliamentary operations.
