Peter Opondo, a seasoned media professional and former Citizen TV executive, transitioned from leading newsrooms to writing speeches for President William Ruto.
Known for his extensive experience in journalism, editorial leadership, and media strategy, Opondo now applies his expertise to crafting speeches and strategic communications for President William Ruto.
Opondo has served as the Information Secretary for the Government of Kenya since May 2024, overseeing strategic communications on-site in Nairobi.
He previously worked as a self-employed consultant in strategy and communications from July 2021 to September 2024, producing commissioned content on media and political strategy, publishing weekly articles, and moderating sessions on media sustainability and innovation at Media Council of Kenya conventions.
Peter Opondo Career Background
Between February and July 2021, Opondo was the Editor of Strategy and Content at Standard Media Group.
From June 2020 to February 2021, he worked as a consultant on media strategy, innovation, and digital transformation, advising TV 47 on product strategy and contributing a chapter to Eastern Africa Journalism.
Earlier, Opondo held senior editorial positions across leading media houses.
At Mediamax Network Limited from April 2018 to June 2020, he served as Editor-in-Chief, overseeing TV and digital.
He also held leadership roles at Royal Media Services, including Group Editorial Consultant from October 2015 to February 2018.
Peter also served as a Managing Editor (TV) and News Manager at NTV Uganda from August 2011 to June 2012.
From March 2009 to June 2011, he served as Managing Editor at Royal Media Services, overseeing the relaunch of Citizen TV.

Educational Background
He holds a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Business Administration and Management, General, from Strathmore Business School in Nairobi.
Opondo also attended IESE Business School in Barcelona, completing the program between 2017 and 2019.
In 2014, he completed a Postgraduate Senior Management Leadership Program through a joint initiative between Strathmore University (Kenya) and Nanyang Technological University (Singapore).
He attended the Africa Good Governance Program at the Les Aspin School of Government in Washington, D.C., USA, from October 2005 to January 2006.
In October 2011, he completed a course on Essential Skills of Broadcast Management at Rhodes University in South Africa.
On June 17, 2014, he participated in the High-Performance Leadership Seminar conducted by Brian Tracy (US) and Azim Jamal (Canada) in Nairobi.
He has also studied Media Strategies for Social Change at the Gold Meir Mt. Carmel Centre in Israel in March 2006.
