Captain Lucas Njeru is a Kenyan pilot with a remarkable 25-year career spanning military, civil, and airline aviation.
He is celebrated as the first pilot of Kenya Airways and among the few in Africa to hold a PhD.
A former Kenya Air Force fighter pilot from 1997 to 2007, he has accumulated over 15,000 flight hours and has flown more than 25 different aircraft types.
He currently serves as a Type Rating Instructor at Kenya Airways.
Trained in aviation leadership by the United States Air Force and Kenya Air Force, Njeru combines deep operational expertise with strategic insight.
Lucas Njeru Career Background
Lucas Njeru has been serving as a Type Rating Instructor Pilot at Kenya Airways since May 2007, accumulating over 17,000 total flight hours, including more than 14,000 instructional hours.
He holds an FAA Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL) and Instructor’s License, as well as a KCAA ATPL, TRE, IRE, and is an approved instructor of flight instructors.
Njeru served as the designated Chief KCAA Flight Examiner for nine years and is an ICAO-endorsed Flight Operations Inspector.

Since March 2021, he has also served as a visiting lecturer at Moi University, sharing his expertise with aviation students.
In addition, he works as a motivational speaker and has offered pro bono services as a corporate and business strategy consultant and a career counselor in aviation.
Prior to joining Kenya Airways, Captain Njeru served in the Kenya Air Force from May 1997 to May 2007, completing a distinguished 10-year tenure as a fighter pilot. He was recognized as the best officer cadet in academics during his training in Kenya and the United States.

Educational Background
Njeru earned his Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Strategic Management from Moi University between 2015 and 2019, completing his thesis with a credit.
He was actively involved in several academic and professional programs, including the SMC-Distinction and the Senior Leadership Development Program (SLDP) at the Kenya School of Government.
Lucas holds a Bachelor of Business Management in Aviation with First Class Honours and an MBA in Strategic Management, both from Moi University.
He also studied Military Science at Egerton University, where he received a Presidential Award, and completed Aviation Leadership training with distinction in Texas, USA.
Earlier, he undertook an Executive Bachelor of Commerce program at the University of Nairobi.
