Samuel Kobia is an African religious leader, theologian, and public servant serving as the Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC).
He was nominated for the position in October 2019 by the former president Uhuru Kenyatta, and this was officially approved by the National Assembly on November 15, 2019, replacing Francis Ole Kaparo.
Previously, Samuel Kobia served as Senior Advisor on Cohesion, Peace and Conflict Resolution in the Executive Office of the President and Cabinet Affairs.
He was born on March 20, 1947, in Miathene, Meru County.
Education
Samuel Kobia began his theological education at St. Paul’s United Theological College in Limuru, Kenya, where he earned a Diploma in Theology in 1971.
He then pursued further studies in the United States, earning a Diploma in Urban Ministry from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in the early 1970s.
In 1978, he completed a master’s degree in city planning at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), where his research focused on urban challenges in Nairobi.
He was later awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity by the Christian Theological Seminary in Indianapolis in 1993.
Career
Samuel Kobia began his career in 1978 with the National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK).
He later served as Executive Secretary of the All-Africa Conference of Churches (AACC) from 1984 to 1993.
From 2004 to 2010, he served as the General Secretary of the World Council of Churches (WCC), based in Geneva, Switzerland, becoming the first African to lead the global Christian body.
Upon returning to Kenya, he continued in public service, eventually being appointed as Special Advisor to the President on Cohesion in 2010.
In 2019, he assumed his current role as Chairperson of the National Cohesion and Integration Commission (NCIC), where he oversees human resource reforms in the civil service.
