Mother of Patient Murdered Inside KNH Raises Critical Questions as Autopsy Results are Made Public

The mother of Edward Maingi, a patient who was murdered while admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), has raised serious questions about the hospital’s security and accountability, following the release of autopsy results.

According to the postmortem conducted at Kenyatta Funeral Home, 38-year-old Maingi died from excessive bleeding caused by a deep throat cut. At the time of the incident, Maingi was bedridden, having been admitted after suffering a stroke.

Speaking to the media on July 21, 2025, the mother of the deceased, Margaret Muthoni, accused KNH staff of negligence. She questioned how the suspect managed to access her son’s ward undetected.

“Why, why, why? Kenyatta Hospital management, administration, even the nurses and doctors in charge—why the laxity? Why didn’t anyone question what that man was doing?” Muthoni lamented.

Family of Edward Maingi to Sue KNH

Her concerns were echoed by Edward’s aunt, Mary Muthoni, who expressed disbelief that no one noticed the suspect entering the ward.

“We have watchmen. There were patients sitting next to him. How is it that not a single person witnessed what happened? If only someone had seen, we could have caught him in the act,” she said.

The family is now considering legal action against KNH for negligence.

“We can’t just take the body and bury him before we sue the Kenyatta National Hospital management,” the family stated.

Meanwhile, Kennedy Kalombotole, the prime suspect in Edward’s murder, was arraigned in court on Monday, July 21, 2025. The court ordered KNH and Nairobi Women’s Hospital to produce Kalombotole’s medical records.

He is also suspected of murdering 39-year-old Gilbert Kinyua, who was found dead with a similar neck wound in Ward 7B on February 7, 2025.

Prosecution Seeks to Detain Suspect for 21 Days

Principal Magistrate Daisy Mutahi directed that the records be presented in court by Thursday before ruling on the police request to detain Kalombotole for 21 days for further investigations.

However, Kalombotole’s defense team argues that continued detention in police custody could interfere with his right to adequate medical care due to his health condition.

Edward Maingi was found murdered on July 17, 2025, at Kenyatta National Hospital in Ward 7B, shortly after visiting hours ended around 2:00 p.m.

He was admitted to KNH on July 11, 2025, for treatment, and was in stable condition during his hospital stay, showing signs of recovery.

At around 11:30 a.m., on the date he was murdered, a ward nurse conducted routine checks on Ndegwa and confirmed he was stable after taking his blood pressure. At 12:30 p.m., a relative visited him and also found him in stable condition before leaving the ward around 1:30 p.m.

However, at around 2:00 p.m., a hospital cleaner noticed blood pooling around Ndegwa’s neck while cleaning the corridor. Ndegwa was found unresponsive in his bed with a deep cut to his throat and was pronounced dead upon examination.
