Police have arrested ten suspects behind the attack of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on September 17.
In a statement, the National Police Service (NPS) stated that ten male suspects were arrested on Wednesday, September 20 by police officers in Maua.
“Police in Maua have arrested ten male suspects following the violent attack on, and disruption of the public function of Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza on September 17,2023 at Bridge Preparatory School,” said NPS.
Moreover, NPS said properties were destroyed and several police officers injured during the attack.
“The incident also left eight NPS Officers seriously injured after being pelted with stones by the attackers. Four vehicles among them, County Government and Police vehicles were also destroyed.
The rowdy crowd also slaughtered a cow that had been donated by the Governor, through her Okolea Project,” stated NPS.
Additionally, NPS provided the names of the suspects who “will answer various charges including taking part in an unlawful assembly; malicious damage to property; and assaulting Police Officers.”
Kawira Mwangaza Attack
The incident occurred when Governor Mwangaza attended a church service in Baite Family Fellowship Outreach in Igembe South.
During the event, Governor Mwangza donated mattresses gumboots, iron sheets and a cow towards helping the less fortunate in society.
However, some rowdy youths slaughtered a cow and burnt the other items the governor donated including mattresses.
“We experienced violence where part of our donations was destroyed including a cow that was meant to benefit a needy family,” she stated.

Governor Mwangaza condemned violence arguing that it was not right to disrupt any charitable effort that is meant to help the needy.

“We want to express our deep disappointment and condemnation of such retrogressive behavior. It is unacceptable to disrupt a charitable effort aimed at helping people in need,” Kawira added.
Also, she appealed to the government to intervene and take legal measures against the criminals.
Despite the attack, the governor vowed to continue providing for the needy and make efforts to improve their living standards.
“We will continue to reach out to the less fortunate and play our part in improving people’s lives,” she assured her supporters.

Kindiki Responds
While responding to the incident, Interior Cabinet Secretary Prof Kithure Kindiki condemned the violence and urged security agencies to arrest the criminals.
“Security agencies have commenced the hunt for the criminals and will round them up, arrest and prosecute every one of them,” said Kindiki.
Also, the CS directed the police to conduct investigations to arrest the masterminds behind the incident.
“Investigations will also ensue on the planners, abettors and financiers of the violence witnessed in the Igembe region of the Count,” stated Kindiki.
CS Kindiki also urged all the Kenyans to carry out their activities lawfully and peacefully.
