Eleven individuals have been rescued after a boat capsized in Lake Baringo on Sunday, April 21.
The boat is reported to have been fetching youth from Salabani Baringo South for a church service in Kokwa Island.
Area Police Commander Julius Kiragu confirmed the incident adding that one person who was rescued alive died while receiving first aid.
“It’s true a boat has capsized in Lake Baringo, and it is reported that it was ferrying church members from Kampi Samaki to Kokwa Island,” said Mr Kiragu.
In a statement, Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the capsizing of the boat stating that rescue efforts for five other individuals are underway.
“11 individuals have been rescued, but the search and rescue operation for more than five others continues,” the society said.
“A multi-agency response team, including the Kenya Red Cross, community members, and marine guards, is currently in action.”

Baringo Governor Speaks of the Capsized Boat
Baringo Governor Benjamin Cheboi while also confirming the incident said that it was with great sorrow that the tragic accident occurred.
“It is with deep sorrow that we confirm the tragic incident that occurred this afternoon involving a group of community members from Salabani en route to a church service in Kokwa Island,” he said.
“According to preliminary reports, their boat capsized approximately 6 kilometers offshore towards Kokwa Island due to strong tides.”
The governor said that out of the 19 individuals onboard, 11 had been successfully rescued, while one person tragically lost their life.

“Seven individuals remain missing at this time. Our hearts and prayers go out to all those affected by this distressing event,” he added.
“In response to this crisis, a multi-agency effort has been mobilized, with search and rescue operations currently underway. Led by the marine police, coast guard, County Government officials, Kenya Red Cross, and local community divers, these efforts are ongoing despite the challenging conditions.”
Cheboi further said that unfortunately, operations were temporarily suspended for 30 minutes due to the persisting strong tides.
“However, plans are in place to resume the search and rescue operations as soon as conditions allow,” he said.
By the time of publishing this article, details regarding what caused the boat to capsize were yet to be established.
