Sixty-nine Members of Parliament (MPs) from Mt Kenya have now backed Interior Cabinet Secretary (CS) Kithure Kindiki to be the region’s political leader intensifying his rivalry with Deputy President (DP) Rigathi Gachagua.

In a meeting held on Thursday, September 12, another 48 MPs legislators signed a declaration, known as the ‘Nyahururu Declaration’ supporting Kindiki’s leadership just days after eleven elected leaders from Mt. Kenya East unanimously did the same totaling 69.

The MPs unanimously resolved to support Kindiki to act as the link with the executive on matters of development and lead the region’s engagement with parliamentary leaders and other government agencies.

This, they said, would promote the coordination of national government functions and address the developmental needs of the Mt. Kenya region and its diaspora.

“Given the prevailing state of affairs and the urgency of the mission ahead, there is a need for a link that will create a nexus between us and the National Executive on development matters,” the legislators said.

“Accordingly, we, as the elected leaders from this region and its diaspora, unanimously resolve that our link to the National Government be the Cabinet Secretary for the Interior and National Administration, Prof. Kithure Kindiki, whose responsibilities include the coordination of National Government functions across the country.”

The MPs also thanked Kenyans for electing the Kenya Kwanza government, led by President William Ruto, and reiterated their commitment to the people of Kenya.

Additionally, the leaders announced plans to hold regular meetings to review progress, celebrate achievements, and address critical issues.

The MPs said they remain committed to the unity and development agenda of all the people of the Mt. Kenya Region and those in the diaspora, even as they advance the collective agenda of the Kenyan nation

“We are convinced beyond doubt that the unity of this region must be pursued in the context of the unity of the nation as a whole. We are one indivisible people of Kenya and must always put our country first-Kenya Kwanza,” the MPs said.
