Inclusive National Justice, Economic and Civic Transformation (INJECT) party leader Morara Kebaso has been set free hours after being arrested by the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

He will be facing charges of creating disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace.

According to the charge sheet seen by The Kenya Times, on October 4, the activist is accused of causing a disturbance by uttering the words “Kufa dereva kufa makanga”.

“At Bomas of Kenya in Langata sub-county within Nairobi County, while attending public participation forum to impeach Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua with others, not before the court. Morara did create disturbance in a manner likely to cause a breach of peace by uttering the words ‘kufa dereva kufa makanga’ which made the public react to the utterances.”

Morara was arrested on Tuesday, October 8, at his Kahawa Sukari office and taken to Lang’ata for questioning following accusations that he disrupted a public participation event at Bomas of Kenya.

Earlier, his lawyer Pareno Solonka revealed that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) stormed his office and took him into custody.

Additionally, he stated that he was later taken to Langata police station.

However, the police have not yet stated the reason for the arrest.

“The vehicle has gone to Langata Police Station. Morara is at Langata Police Station. Morara has just been bundled into this Subaru by DCI officials. We don’t know where he is being taken or the reasons for being taken.”

Morara Speaks After Arrest

Speaking moments after being taken into custody, Morara confirmed his arrest, indicating that he was bundled up over the events of the Bomas of Kenya.

In disbelief, the activist stated that the ordeal did not make sense, asking Kenyans to stand with him in his time of need.

“I have been arrested over what happened at Bomas. Can you imagine? Can you imagine? Does it even make sense? What is this now? Please don’t abandon me in my hour of need.” stated Morara through his X account.

Speaking during a Spice FM show, Kebaso said that the attack launched on him at Bomas was pre-planned explaining that there were clear signs that a trap had been laid for him.

He showed up for a public participation forum for an impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

“There were enough red flags that I did not see. I had announced my position on my TikTok and Twitter that we impeach both the President and Deputy President and having done that there were people who were uncomfortable with that.”

LSK Taking Action About the Attack

The Law Society of Kenya (LSK) President Faith Odhiambo on October 7 said that the society was making moves to fulfil its mandate of ensuring accountability for human rights violations.

Therefore, she noted that they were following up with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP).

“In line with our mandate under section 4 of the LSK Act, the Society takes all reasonable action to defend human rights and demand accountability from public authorities vested with the mandate to investigate and prosecute violations thereof DCI Kenya and ODPP_KE,” stated Faith Odhiambo.
