After Sitting KCPE Exams 9 Times Mathew Nyamlori Dies of Cancer

Mathew Nyamlori, famously known for sitting the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) nine times, has passed away.

Nyamlori’s death was confirmed on Monday, January 20, by his long-time friend, Okoto Nyuka Bel on social media.

According to Okoto, Nyamlori has passed away after a courageous battle with Stage 3 gastric cancer, a fate that he had already accepted. 

Further, he revealed that the academic champion had even made personal requests in anticipation of his passing.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear friend, Mathew Nyamlori, who faced his battle with cancer with incredible bravery. He passed away peacefully this morning at 7:00 a.m. as we were preparing for his discharge.

“He leaves behind a legacy of strength, resilience, and hope. Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we are grateful for the time we spent with him and the inspiration he gave us. Rest in peace, Mathew. You fought a valiant fight,” Okoto stated.

The Story of Mathew Nyamlori

Nyamlori captured national attention for sitting the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) nine times. His first attempt was in 1990.  

Despite repeated setbacks, he refused to abandon his academic dreams, finally earning a place at Nairobi School.

In 2021, Nyamlori joined Kenyatta University to pursue a degree in Public Administration and Policy.

His discipline, dedication, and strict adherence to school values earned him admiration from peers and teachers alike.

“He was a true reflection of Nairobi School’s culture,” a former classmate recalled. “He taught us about resilience, discipline, and standing firm in the face of adversity.”

However, in 2022, Nyamlori’s life took a difficult turn when he was diagnosed with gastric cancer. His treatment journey involved multiple surgeries and an extended stay in the Intensive Care Unit.

Complications, including partial paralysis of his diaphragm, kept him on a ventilator and extended his recovery far beyond initial expectations.

Fundraisers for his Treatment

Fundraising efforts were launched to cover his escalating medical expenses, surpassing Ksh1.2 million.

Further, well-wishers from across the country came together in support, donating funds and sharing messages of hope.

Despite the challenges, Nyamlori remained a beacon of courage, fighting valiantly against the disease while inspiring others with his unwavering faith in better days.

Moreover, his friends and family remained hopeful, trusting that he would pull through and use his survival to inspire others facing similar challenges.
