Govt Critic Attacked and Murdered Next to Police Station

Protests erupted in Elburgon town, Molo Constituency, Nakuru County, following the brutal murder of activist Richard Otieno, popularly known as “Molo President.”

According to local youths, the activist was attacked and killed by unknown assailants on the night of Saturday, January 18, just 400 meters from the Elburgon Police Station.

The angry residents stormed the police station on Sunday, January 19, disrupting normal activities in the area.

The youth-led demonstrations demanded answers from law enforcement officers about the circumstances surrounding Otieno’s murder.

Further, the youth accused the police of inaction and expressed their frustration over the matter.

While carrying Otirno’s body in a rag, the residents took to the streets to demand justice and accountability from authorities.

Moreover, they accused the police of negligence and failing to protect a man who was well-known for championing social justice and holding government leaders accountable.

The protesters chanted slogans as they demanded swift investigations into Otieno’s murder, calling for the arrest of those responsible.

His murder comes months after he gained national attention as one of the leaders of the Gen Z protests in Molo.

He had been among a group of youth arrested during the demonstrations in June 2024, which called for better governance, economic reforms, and an end to police brutality.

Local police have yet to release an official statement on the murder or provide any details about suspects or leads.

Other Youths Found Dead

The murder has reignited concerns about the safety of activists and youths in the country.

In a separate incident on January 15, the body of an unidentified male was discovered under a bridge along the busy Thika Road near Ruiru, causing a significant traffic snarl-up.

The lifeless body, believed to belong to a youth, was spotted floating beneath the bridge opposite Astro Petrol Station and the well-wisher proceeded to the pool of water to pull out the body of the man.

Some of the residents had also started protesting along the road claiming that the unidentified man must have been killed by the state.

Since the June 2024 nationwide protest, incidences of young Kenyans being killed and dumped have been on the rise.

Earlier in January the lifeless body of John Muchiri Muthoni was found naked, with clothes lying beside it in Kiambu County.

Additionally, the body of 24-year-old activist Ibrahim Hilal Mwiti, who went missing in November last year, was found at Thika Level Five Hospital mortuary.
