The Atheists in Kenya Society have praised Pope Francis for blessing same sex couples, noting that the Catholic head’s move to administer blessings to the same sex marriage is a game changing decision.
In a statement signed by their president Harrison Mumia, the atheists welcomed the Vatican decision noting that it sends a message to the religious community that gay rights are also human rights.
“This decision is a game changer for the Catholic faithful worldwide and the Christian community in Kenya.
The Atheists in Kenya Society welcomes this decision, as it sends a clear message to the religious community in Kenya that gay rights are human rights and there is nothing immoral or sinful about same sex relationships,” the atheist community noted through their official X account.
Atheists Criticize Anti-Gayism Campaigns
Further, the community noted that there has been a steep rise in anti-LGBTQ activity organized by prominent politicians and religious leaders in Kenya over the past couple of years.
They also noted that President William Ruto has been quoted saying he would not allow homosexual acts or same-sex marriage during his tenure.
Notably, President Ruto has been further quoted saying that the Kenyan culture and religion does not allow same-sex marriages.
“It is not possible for our country Kenya to allow same-sex marriages. It will happen in other countries but not in Kenya,” President Ruto stated in March 2023, noting that he respected the Supreme Court’s ruling on the right of association for homosexual people in Kenya.

On this, the Supreme court, on 12th September 2023, reaffirmed the National Gay and Lesbian Human Rights Commission (NGLHRC) the right to registration.
“Despite gayism being illegal (in Kenya), they have a right of association,” the controversial ruling stated by Kenya’s apex court stated.
However, despite the pushback from the head of state, the atheist community noted that they stand in solidarity with homosexual people in the country.
“The Atheists in Kenya Society will continue its campaigns to protect and uphold the rights of LGBTI people in Kenya, including their right to life, freedom and safety,” the Atheists stated.
Pope’s Stand on Same Sex Couples in Kenya
On December 18th, in a ruling approved by Pope Francis, the Vatican allowed Roman Catholic priests to administer blessings to same-sex couples.
However, the caveat was that as long as the priests are not part of regular Church rituals or liturgies.
The announcing document from the Vatican’s doctrinal office, effectively reversed a declaration the same body had issued in 2021, noting that such blessings would not legitimize irregular situations but be a sign that God welcomes all.

Further, quoting the Fiducia Supplicants declaration, he noted that it advocates for the recognition of an institution of marriage as only a union between a man and a woman.
