The Office of the Attorney General and Department of Justice has announced opportunities for qualified individuals to join the Waqf Commission.
In a notice published on Tuesday, the Office of the AG invited applications from persons interested in becoming members of the Commission.
The available slots, according to the notice, include one for an Alim, a Muslim who is well-versed in Islamic Jurisprudence.
Additionally, the Office is looking to recruit one person who is prominent in business or entrepreneurship and six persons who shall be experienced and knowledgeable in law, accounting, land economics, social work, finance and investment, architecture or administration.
In total, there are eight part-time positions open for appointment to the Waqf Commission, each with a five-year term, renewable once.
This body, established under the Waqf Act, CAP. 109 of the Laws of Kenya, plays a crucial role in managing and overseeing waqf properties and promoting charitable activities within the Muslim community.
These roles are critical for the effective implementation of the Waqf Act, ensuring the efficient management of waqf properties and the collection of zakat and other charitable contributions.
Functions of the Waqf Commission
The main function of Waqf commission is to administer and manage registered Waqf properties and implement the provisions of the Waqf Act.
The commission also establishes necessary structures for the commission’s functions, formulate the policies for effective performance, collect Zakat and other contributions.

In addition, the commission plays the role of developing continuous training programs for trustees and raise awareness on Waqf matters.
Requirements & How to Apply
The candidates must be prominent in the field, experienced in areas such as law, accounting, land economics, social work, finance and investment, architecture, or administration.
Shortlisted candidates will need to provide a tax compliance certificate from Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Certificate of clearance from the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Current police clearance certificate from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), Self-Declaration Clearance from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and Credit Reference Bureau Clearance Certificate.

Interested and qualified candidates should complete the Application for Employment Form available on the Office of the Attorney General’s website at www.statelaw.go.ke.
Applicants must submit a scanned copy of the form along with their curriculum vitae, academic and professional certificates, and other supporting documents online.
However, applications should be clearly marked (APPLICATION FOR THE POSITION OF MEMBER WAQF COMMISSION).
