Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has broken his silence on the impeachment of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja during an interview on Kameme TV.
He called Sakaja’s leadership a betrayal of Nairobians and demanded his immediate impeachment, even as President William Ruto met with Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) at State House to urge calm and encourage dialogue.
“I don’t see any problem when people call each other ‘cousins’,” Owino began, framing his critique not as tribal, but driven by governance failures.
“When Sakaja was campaigning, he was to work for Nairobians,” he said, noting the sacrifices ordinary citizens make: “People are sacrificing to survive… when people elect a leader… that leader will work for them.”
Owino reminded voters of their faith in Sakaja, especially among the Kikuyu community.
“Kikuyus were the first people to vote for Sakaja. They even left Igathe believing in Sakaja. So, you can’t tell Kikuyus are tribal; it is the politicians that are doing it.”
Nairobi is not working
“We see sewage all over, if it rains for 30 min you can’t walk in town, potholes all over, we even now have goons in town to attack people. This is not why Sakaja was elected.”
He cited corruption flagged by the Auditor General: “When you look at his office, it’s full of corruption, even the auditor has flagged it. These are the things that make Sakaja should not be sitting in that position even for another extra day.”

Pointing to leadership failures in essential services, he rejected political considerations over performance.
“People should look at progress first, not politics. If you go to hospitals, there are no medicines, you can’t compare politics with life.”
He dismissed calls for patience, stating that, “Things that he has not done in 3 years he can’t do in 2 years.”
Babu Owino to President Ruto
Owino did not hold back on President Ruto meeting MCAs after they tabled Sakaja’s Impeachment motion.
“As the President of Kenya, when we say there is corruption you agree, but when you look around, SHA is not working, education capitation, even ghost hospital. You as the President you are protecting a corrupt governor… You call MCAs to State House to protect Sakaja. Which corruption are you fighting? And you are promoting it.”
Owino also took aim at Raila after he had met with those MCAs at the same time.
“Raila is also defending him, but I don’t want to talk about him because he has been my boss. I put a reservation on that.”
He expressed displeasure with Raila Odinga’s earlier role in rallying MCAs, stating, “I was not happy even with what Raila did to call those MCAs.”
Owino clarified that if Sakaja is impeached alone, the deputy governor will resume office.

“If the Governor is impeached the Deputy is available, he can take over. If they were both impeached, then we have a by‑election. No one is pushing MCAs to impeach Sakaja.”
MCAs Meeting with Ruto and Raila
President William Ruto convened Nairobi MCAs at State House, Nairobi, to press for calm and dialogue over the threatened impeachment of Governor Sakaja.
At the same time, ODM leader Raila Odinga hosted a separate meeting with Nairobi MCAs to shelve the impeachment motion pending negotiations.
These moves came after growing frustration over Nairobi’s decaying infrastructure, alleged corruption, and underdelivery on key services.
The Auditor General’s office flagged multiple financial irregularities in Nairobi County, lending weight to threats of impeachment.
Governor Sakaja now faces mounting pressure from both county and national leadership to address governance gaps.
