United States President Joe Biden on Tuesday, September 19, commended President William Ruto for his efforts to donate police officers to Haiti.
Addressing the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, Biden urged the international community to step up in aiding solutions to challenges facing the world.
In particular, Biden mentioned the case of Haiti where different nations have volunteered to facilitate restoration of order including Kenya.
“For example, on Haiti, the Caribbean communities facilitated a dialogue among Haitian society. I thank President William Ruto of Kenya for his willingness to serve as the lead nation of a UN-backed security support system,” Biden noted.
Further, the US President committed to pushing the UN Security Council to expedite the authorization of the police program.
“The people of Haiti cannot wait any longer,” President Biden added.
Kenya to Send 1,000 Police to Haiti
President Ruto who is presently in New York for the summit also met world leaders to lobby for more support in the UN security mission.

Haiti, a nation in the Carribean sea has experienced prolonged violence that has since left thousands displaced.
In July, Kenyan government announced its intention to send a contingent of 1,000 police officers to train and assist Haitian police officers in efforts to restore peace.
Two months later, however, the police officers are yet to depart for Haiti.
Kenya’s Foreign Policy
Ruto’s special mention in the UNGA was an extension of his Kenya’s newfound recognition in global matters.
Since his ascension to power in 2022, President Ruto has made clear his intention to shape Kenya’s foreign policy anchored on active participation on global matters such as security and climate action campaign.

His administration has been involved in peace processes aimed at restoring peace in the Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, and Sudan.
Days after hosting a historic conference in Nairobi, Ruto is set to give a key address in the UNGA on climate change.
