Malaysian airline AirAsia X (AAX) is set to suspend its flights on the Kuala Lumpur–Nairobi route.
In a statement, the airline announced that the suspension will take effect on September 1, 2025, due to lower-than-expected travel demand.
“Effective September 1, 2025, AirAsia X (flight code D7) will suspend flights between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi as part of its network optimization initiative in response to lower demand,” the statement read.
The airline has informed all affected guests about their service recovery options for bookings impacted by the route change.
“We have notified all impacted guests as soon as possible regarding service recovery options (SROs) for bookings on AAX for travel from September 1, 2025, onward,” the company stated.

The service recovery options include a full refund, a credit account, or a free-of-charge flight change (for travel before August 31, 2025) to help guests make alternate travel arrangements. Guests can also chat with Bo to access these options.
Additionally, the airline said it will keep reviewing its network and customer demand. It will make changes as needed to stay profitable and offer the best value fares for its services.
The decision to suspend flights to Nairobi comes less than a year after the service was launched.

AirAsia X initiated its direct flight from Kuala Lumpur to Nairobi on November 15, 2024. This was the airline’s first venture into the East Africa region.
The Nairobi route was designed to serve as a crucial link connecting Asia to Africa, fostering stronger trade, tourism, and business ties within the region. By facilitating direct air travel between Kuala Lumpur and Nairobi, the airline aimed to enhance accessibility and spur economic opportunities for both countries.

We anticipate carrying over 156,000 travellers annually on this route, which will strengthen ties and boost the tourism sectors in both Malaysia and Kenya,” Benyamin Ismail, CEO of AirAsia X said during the flight launch.

The AAX flight to Nairobi was also introduced to offer a seamless Fly-Thru connection, creating an essential link between Kenya and 130 destinations across Southeast Asia, Northern and Central Asia, and Australia, providing affordable and convenient travel options for all while reinforcing its commitment to global connectivity.
Currently, the route operates four times a week and remains the only direct air link between Malaysia and Africa.
