Bolt is now offering Tuk Tuk rides to passengers in Mombasa, expanding the transport options available alongside motorcycles and cars.
The ride-hailing company announced the development on August 7, noting that Tuk Tuks are an important part of Mombasa’s transport culture and everyday mobility.
Tuk Tuks have been a common mode of transport in Mombasa, particularly for short-distance journeys, trips through busy neighborhoods and travel along the city’s narrow streets.
According to Bolt, making Tuk Tuks available through its platform will give passengers an additional way to access the familiar form of transport through the same app they use to book motorcycles and cars.
The company said the move is not intended to change how people in Mombasa travel but to bring the city’s existing transport options together on one platform.
Dimmy Kanyankole, Senior General Manager, Bolt East Africa, said the company’s approach reflects the role Tuk Tuks already play in the city’s daily life.

“One of the things that makes Mombasa unique is that Tuk Tuks aren’t just another mode of transport, they’re part of the city’s everyday rhythm,” Kanyankole said.
He noted that residents use Tuk Tuks for different activities, including travelling to work, visiting family, running errands and exploring the coast.
“By making them easier to access through the Bolt app, we’re reflecting the way people already move while giving passengers more choice depending on the type of journey they’re making,” he added.
Bolt Says New Option Gives Passengers More Choice
Mombasa has a diverse transport ecosystem, with Tuk Tuks operating alongside motorcycles, cars and other forms of public transport.
The compact three-wheelers are particularly suited to shorter trips and navigating busy areas, making them a practical option for residents and visitors.

Bolt said the integration will allow passengers to select their preferred transport option based on factors such as convenience, distance and budget.
Kanyankole said digital mobility services should consider the transport habits and characteristics of individual cities.
“Technology works best when it adapts to local communities rather than expecting communities to adapt to technology,” he said.
“Every city has its own transport culture, and Mombasa’s is one of the most distinctive in Kenya. Our role is simply to make that experience more accessible and convenient for the people who use it every day.”
With the addition of Tuk Tuks, passengers in Mombasa can use the Bolt app to choose between Tuk Tuks, motorcycles and cars when planning their journeys.
The company said the option is intended to provide greater flexibility for passengers traveling to destinations such as the beach, Mombasa Old Town, local businesses and residential neighborhoods.
The move also brings one of Mombasa’s most recognizable forms of transport into the city’s growing digital mobility ecosystem.
