The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has imposed a fine of KSh 2.5 million on the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) following the opening match between Kenya and DR Congo at Kasarani Stadium on Sunday, August 3, 2025.
CAF’s decision follows multiple security breaches reported during the African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 tournament.
According to the official report from the CAF Security Officer, several incidents violated safety protocols, including:
- There was an unauthorized stampede at entry Gate 11, which endangered fans attempting to enter the stadium.
- Security breaches in restricted areas designated as Public Security Areas (PSA).
- Fans igniting fires inside the stadium, specifically behind the stands at Block 18.
- A motorbike dangerously maneuvering through the crowd.
Additionally, state security personnel denied access to certain officials, including CAF staff and protocol officers, to the VVIP area. This included a member of the South African President’s Close Protection Unit.

Furthermore, a Falcon Private Security guard allegedly assaulted a member of CAF’s commercial staff and a sponsor representative.
Before the CHAN tournament, both the government and CAF announced a series of stringent measures aimed at ensuring safety and order during the event.
The CHAN matches are being held in Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums, with the highly anticipated final scheduled for August 30. Kenya is co-hosting the tournament alongside Tanzania and Uganda from August 2 to August 30.

According to the Ministry of Sports, fans can only gain access to the stadiums using digital tickets, which must be purchased online.
No physical tickets will be accepted at the gates. Fans are encouraged to purchase their tickets through the official CHAN ticketing portal, with payments accepted via M-Pesa or bank cards.
Dos and Don’ts During the Tournament
Once the purchase is confirmed, ticket holders will receive a digital confirmation via SMS or email to present at the stadium gate.
To maintain order during the tournament, the Local Organising Committee (LOC) has banned a variety of items commonly associated with lively football celebrations. These include:
- Vuvuzelas, megaphones, loudspeakers, whistles, drums, and other noise-making devices
- Firearms and sharp objects
- Flares and fireworks
- Signal jamming or blocking devices
- Political banners and offensive signage
- Large backpacks and helmets
- Takeaway food and drinks
- Pets (only service animals are permitted)
Food brought from outside the stadium will not be allowed unless it is for infants or medical reasons.

Kenya is scheduled to face Angola on Thursday, August 7, 2025, at Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Nairobi, at 7:00 p.m. The FKF is yet to respond to the penalty issued by CAF.
