Health CS Mutahi Kagwe on Tuesday, July 26 inaugurated the National Cancer Institute of Kenya board.
While speaking during the inauguration, Kagwe reaffirmed government’s commitment to provide quality healthcare to all Kenyans.
He further added that health is a fundamental right and an enabler of socio-economic development.
Moreover, the National Cancer Institute of Kenya board is chaired by Amref CEO Gitahi Githinji.
Likewise, Alfred Karagu will serve the board as the Chief Executive officer.
Board members include: The Star Chief Operating Officer Agnes Kalekye, Dr. Ochiba Lukandu, Catherine Wachira, Francisca Atieno, Mahindra Shah, Kenrick Ayot, Mildred Mugambi, Samuel Gathere and Patrick Gathagu.
In addition, the board was established in to satisfy the need for a more coordinated health sector. This was especially in response to the growing cancer burden in the country.
Moreover, the board is expected to ensure cancer prevention systems are in place and those for cancer care delivery are in harmony.
“Over the past few years, we have seen the reputation of government institutions dragged in the mud due to the misconduct of a few officials. I urge you to appraise yourselves with the provisions of the Mwongozo Code and respect the separation of power between the management and the board. Let the management do its work, while you play your oversight role,” CS Kagwe told the board members.
Furthermore, Kagwe inaugurated the Nursing Council of Kenya board, the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority Board and the National Committee on Infant and Young Child Feeding.
The Committee on Infant and Young Child Feeding was established in line with provisions of the breast milk substitutes Act.

This committee provides rules for the advertisement, promotion and labeling of designated or complementary infant and young children’s food products.
Acting Director General for health Dr. Patrick Amoth will chair this committee with Veronica Kirogo its the secretary.
Members of the committee include, Peter Mutua, Priscilla Kairu, Evalyne Gicheru, Gladys Machira, Brian Maugo, David Okeyo, Samuel Nyamu, Martha Nyagaya, Julia Mwaisekanyi, Ruth Nduati and Shadrack Oiye.
Similarly, the Kenya Nuclear Regulatory Authority board will be tasked with regulating the peaceful use of ionizing radiation.
It is set to ensure protection of occupationally exposed workers, patients undergoing medical radiation procedures, members of the public and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, while at the same time ensuring that society enjoys optimal socio-economic benefits.
George Njoroge is the acting director general at the authority while Zeinab Gura, Samuel Gitau, Titus Ingana, Col. Charity Njuguna, Kakai Kissinger, Pauline Moranga, Margare Mwonjoria and Micheal Lavi Muia are members of the board.
The Nursing Council of Kenya Board which will be chaired by Professor Eunice Ndirangu, is the only professional regulatory body for all cadres of nursing and midwives in Kenya.
It will be tasked with ensuring the delivery of safe and effective nursing and midwifery care to the public through quality education and best practices.
Ednah Kimaiyo Tallam is the council’s chief executive officer while other members include Judith Awinja, Pauline Ngala, Michael Nyongesa, Tecla Ngotie, Catherine Mwaura, Albanus Mutisya, Eric Kemboi and Joel Gondi.
