CS Ogamba Appoints New UoN Council in Major Shake-Up of 20 Universities [Full List]

Education Cabinet Secretary (CS) Julius Ogamba has made key appointments and reappointments in various universities.

Silas Jakakimba, a former aide to Raila Odinga, has been appointed to a new state role as a Council Member at Kirinyaga University.

In a gazette notice dated July 25, 2025, CS Ogamba appointed a new council for the University of Nairobi, naming Prof. Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha as Chairperson.

“In exercise of the powers conferred by Section 36(1) of the Universities Act, the Cabinet Secretary for Education appoints Chacha Nyaigotti-Chacha (Prof.) Chairperson,” read part of the notice.

Additionally, the following individuals were appointed as non-executive members of the University of Nairobi Council for three years, effective July 25, 2025:

  • Samuel Njuguna Kimani
  • Dr. Jonathan Ltipalei Lodompui
  • Mary Amuyunzu

Kenyatta University (KU)

The Education CS has appointed two new members to the Kenyatta University Council.

Joash Mokamba Keraita and Isaac Opuya Litali were appointed as members of the council.

Ogamba has also reappointed two members to the Kenyatta University Council.

Maj. Gen. (Rtd.) Bashir Yusuf and Alice Waruguru Muita as council members.

The appointments will run for three years.

Egerton University

Additionally, the CS has appointed a new council for Egerton University.

Prof. James K. Sang was appointed as the Chairperson of the Egerton University Council.

At the same time, Mohamed Ahmed Mohamed and Amos Okello were appointed as members of the Council.

The appointments are effective from July 25, 2025, and will run for a term of three years.

Kisii University

Ogamba has made fresh appointments to the Cabinet Secretary appointed the following individuals as council members of Kisii University under paragraph (d):

  • Dr. Pamela Awuor Ochieng
  • Rev. Prof. Peter Mageto
  • Dr. Mwenda Makathimo

At the same time, the CS has reappointed Josephat Kipsoy Sawe as a member of the Kisii University Council.

The appointments are effective from July 25, 2025, and will run for a term of three years.

Eldoret University

For Eldoret University, CS Julius Ogamba has appointed Evelyne Timpiyan Legis and Razoah Vitisia as members of the University of Eldoret Council, under Section 36(1), paragraph (d) of the Universities Act.

Dr. Peter Onchari Kereri was also reappointed as a member of the University of Eldoret Council.

The Appointment and re-appointment will run for three years.

University of Embu

At Embu University, Julius Ogamba has appointed Prof. P. M. Kutima as the Chairperson of the University of Embu Council.

In addition, Christine Guchu was appointed as a member of the Council.

Both appointments are non-executive and will run for a term of three years, effective from July 25, 2025.

Kirinyaga University

The CS also announced changes in the Kirinyaga University Council.

The new council members, according to the gazette notice, are:

  • Silas Jakakimba
  • Ibrahim Khamis Mutwafy
  • Ursula Sabina Oyatsi
  • Margaret Kathambi Gitonga

The appointments are effective as of July 25, 2025, and will remain in place for three years.

Murang’a University

In addition, CS has appointed four individuals to the Murang’a University of Technology Council.

According to the notice, the following individuals will serve as council members for a term of three years, effective from the same date:

  • Allan Mugambi Michael
  • Mrs. Amran Mohamed Ali
  • Getrude Chemutai Kurgat
  • Abdul Ramadhan Odhiambo

Garissa University

Julius Ogamba also appointed three new members and reappointed one to the Garissa University Council.

The following individuals were appointed to serve as members of the council for a three-year term, effective immediately:

  • John Karani Ndiwa
  • Jonah N. Kariuki (CPA)
  • Dr. Alice Otwala

In the same notice, Hassan Sheikh Mohamed was reappointed to continue serving as a member of the council for another three years.

Mama Ngina University College

Ogamba has appointed five new members to the Mama Ngina University College Council.

The newly appointed members, who will serve a term of three years effective from that date, are:

  • Lizzie Chongoti
  • Dr. Joyce Kemunto Nyabuti
  • Gilbert Wafula Nyongesa
  • Thomas Meigkwelly Leremore
  • Davies Mukuria

Nyandarua University College

In the Nyandarua University College Council, Ogamba has appointed four individuals who will serve for a term of three years, effective from the same date. The new council members are:

  • Sophy Kirkwony
  • Fatuma Abdi
  • Julius G. Obare Mokogi (CPA)
  • Peter Maru Kariuki

Bomet University College

Ogamba has also reconstituted the Bomet University College Council, appointed new members and reappointed one.

Prof. John O. Shiundu was appointed as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the council.

Other newly appointed members include:

  • Dr. Emily Kwamboka Nyagaram
  • Rose Chepkorir
  • Fredrick Njoroge

Additionally, Reuben C. Butaki was reappointed to continue serving as a member of the council for a further term of three years, also effective from July 25, 2025.

Koitaleel Samoei University College

Education CS has appointed a new council for Koitaleel Samoei University College.

Prof. Josephat Kipkoech Yego was appointed as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the council.

Also appointed as council members under paragraph (d) are:

  • Elizabeth Mjomba
  • Prof. Raphael Kapiyo

The appointments are effective from July 25, 2025, and will run for a term of three years.

Moi University

In the Moi University Council, CS Ogamba has appointed Mercy Ringa Njagi as a member of the Moi University Council.

The appointment is effective immediately and will remain in place for a term of three years.

Laikipia University

CS has also appointed Eliazer Kipyego Kogey as a member of the Laikipia University Council.

The appointment is effective as of that date and will remain in place for three years.

Rongo University

As per the notice, Education CS has appointed Willy Kioko Malile to the Council of Rongo University.

The three-year term takes effect from July 25, 2025, as outlined in the official gazette notice.

The Technical University of Kenya

Ogamba has appointed Eng. John Nyambok is a Council Member of the Technical University of Kenya.

At the same time, he has re-appointed Dr. Idle Omar Farah as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Council of the Technical University of Kenya.

The three-year term takes effect from July 25, 2025.

Karatina University

CS Ogamba has made new appointments and a re-appointment to the Council of Karatina University.

Appointed Members (effective July 25, 2025, for a three-year term):

  • David Joseph Osero
  • Edward Kobuthi

Re-appointed Member:

  • David Opiyo

South Eastern Kenya University (SEKU)

Ogamba has appointed David Kipngetich Koech as a Member of the Council of South Eastern Kenya University, for a term of three (3) years, effective July 25, 2025.

Taita Taveta University

Julius Ogamba has made the following appointments;

Re-Appointment:

  • Prof. Isaac Meroka Mbeche has been re-appointed as the Non-Executive Chairperson of the Council of Taita Taveta University for a further term of three (3) years, effective July 25, 2025.

Appointments:

  • Emma Kibiru
  • Stephen Kilungya

Both have been appointed as Members of the University Council for a term of three (3) years, effective July 25, 2025.

Co-operative University of Kenya

Ogamba, has made appointments to the Council of the Co-operative University of Kenya.

Appointments:

  • Anthony Saiti
  • Mary Simat

The two have been appointed as Members of the University Council for three (3) years, effective July 25, 2025.
