KU, JKUAT, Kisii University Top List for Most Degree Programmes in 2025

Kenyatta University, Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology, and Kisii University have emerged as the top institutions offering the highest number of degree programmes in Kenya according to data from the Commission for University Education (CUE).

Kenyatta University tops the list of Kenyan universities with the highest number of degree programmes, offering 129 as of April 2025.

The institution also leads in postgraduate education with 110 master’s programmes and 17 PhD programmes.

JKUAT follows closely with 294 approved programmes, comprising 125 undergraduate, 102 master’s, and 67 PhD programmes.

Despite ranking second in undergraduate numbers, JKUAT surpasses Kenyatta University in total programmes due to its high number of PhD offerings.

Kisii University comes third, with 205 approved programmes, including 92 undergraduate, 65 master’s programmes, and 48 PhD programmes.

Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology is placed fourth, offering 226 programmes, including 90 undergraduate, 82 master’s, and 54 PhD programmes.

Maseno University follows with 211 programmes—86 undergraduate, 78 master’s, and 47 PhD.

Despite having fewer undergraduate programmes than some of its peers, the University of Nairobi remains a powerhouse in postgraduate education.

It provides a total of 343 approved programmes, the highest overall, with 78 undergraduate, 159 master’s, and 106 PhD programmes.

Mount Kenya University, a private institution, offers 160 programmes, comprising 73 undergraduate, 54 master’s, and 33 PhD programmes. Maasai Mara University features next with 116 programmes, including 72 undergraduate, 30 master’s, and 14 PhDs.

Egerton University offers 183 programmes, broken down into 70 undergraduate, 62 master’s, and 51 PhD programmes.

Moi University completes the top list with 208 programmes, consisting of 69 undergraduate, 98 master’s, and 41 PhDs.

Approved Undergraduate Degree Programmes in Other Public Universities

Chuka University and the Technical University of Kenya (TUK) are leading among Kenya’s mid-tier public universities in the number of approved undergraduate degree programmes.

Chuka University offers 68-degree programmes, while the Technical University of Kenya closely follows with 68 undergraduate courses as well, despite having no master’s or PhD offerings listed.

Other universities with a strong undergraduate presence include Southeastern Kenya University (SEKU) with 59, the University of Eldoret (59), and Technical University of Mombasa (53).

Meru University of Science and Technology provides 52 undergraduate programmes, while Pwani University and Murang’a University of Technology have 32 and 30 respectively.

Approved Undergraduate Degree Programmes in Private Universities in Kenya

Kabarak University has emerged as the private university with the highest number of accredited academic programmes in Kenya.

The institution leads its peers with a total of 66 approved programmes, comprising 36 undergraduate degrees, 24 master’s, and 6 PhDs. It is followed closely by the Catholic University of Eastern Africa, which has 59 programmes, and Kenya Methodist University, which boasts 50.

Other top private universities include Daystar University with 49 programmes, and Strathmore University with 50, driven largely by their robust master’s offerings.
