The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), through its Kirinyaga East Sub-County detectives, has arrested a prime suspect in the kidnapping of Gatuto Primary School Headteacher, Joshua Kerai.
The abduction occurred on November 4, 2025, in Kagumo, Kirinyaga County, and has led to the arrest of Patrick Gacoki Muembe, who was tracked down after days of intense pursuit.
Attack on Joshua Kerai
Muembe is accused by the DCI of orchestrating the bold attack alongside two accomplices who remain at large.
According to investigators, the gang ambushed the headteacher and forced him into a maroon Toyota Ractis, registration number KCP 816F.
The victim was then subjected to a terrifying ordeal as the kidnappers drove him aimlessly around the area.
Kerai was later found abandoned and in distress inside the same vehicle at the Sahara Petrol Station in Kutus Town.
Detectives launched a multi-pronged investigation immediately after the abduction was reported.
A passerby rushed him to Kerugoya Catholic Hospital, where he received medical attention. Police say the victim was shaken but stable.
Forensic teams dusted the vehicle for fingerprints and collected DNA samples, which were later matched to Muembe.
Detectives analyzed CCTV footage from Kutus and Kagumo, traced phone signals, and used vehicle registration databases to narrow down suspects.
Serial Offender
Investigations have revealed that Patrick Gachoki Muembe is a serial offender linked to multiple crimes across the Kirinyaga East region.
Authorities say his criminal record includes motor vehicle theft, stock theft, robberies, and shop break-ins.
“This is not his first brush with the law. He has been on our radar for some time.”
Police believe the kidnapping was part of a broader criminal scheme, linking the two accomplices who helped Muembe to kidnap the headteacher to the other reported crimes still under investigation.
While the motive remains unclear, investigators suspect the gang intended to extort money from the victim or his family.
Detectives are now pursuing the two remaining suspects, who are believed to have fled Kirinyaga after Muembe’s arrest.
Muembe is currently being held at a local police station in the area, which police have chosen not to reveal at the moment, as officers prepare to charge him.
If found guilty, Muembe is likely to receive stiff penalties given the gravity of the crime and his history of repeat offenses.
Kirinyaga East Sub-County Police Commander Johnson Wachira has stated that the case will be thoroughly investigated as soon as possible to help improve the deteriorating security situation in the area.
“We are treating this as a high-priority case. Kidnapping is a serious crime, and we will ensure justice is served.”
Justice to be Served
Residents of Kagumo and Kutus have expressed shock over the incident, calling for heightened security in schools and public spaces.
