The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has arrested eight people in connection with the theft of government-subsidized fertilizer during the June 25 Gen Z protests.

According to a statement released on 30 June, the suspects were apprehended in an intelligence-led operation spanning Luluma Village, Makiri area and Maua Township in Igembe South Sub-County.

Police recovered 63 bags of stolen fertilizer, along with eight bags of cement, a vehicle and three motorcycles allegedly used to ferry the stolen goods.

The recovered vehicle, a silver Toyota Probox bearing registration number KCW 822T, and three motorcycles — KMFS 106Q, KMFY 687H and KMFM 529E — are currently in police custody as investigations continue.

DCI say the arrests mark a breakthrough in efforts to stem looting and property damage that erupted during last week’s nationwide protests driven by discontent among Kenyan youth.

In a related operation in Malindi, Kilifi County, police also arrested 14 suspects linked to property vandalism during the demonstrations.

The arrests were made following what officials described as a “meticulous forensic analysis.”

All suspects are being held pending arraignment. Police say investigations are ongoing, with more arrests and recoveries expected in the coming days.

Law enforcement agencies have reiterated their commitment to bringing to justice those involved in criminal activities under the guise of protests.

This comes a day after seven people were arrested, and two guns recovered in connection with weapons stolen during recent Gen Z protests.

Other Arrests Related to Gen z Protests

In a statement on June 28, police in Kiambu County said an AK-47 rifle, a riot control rifle, and other police gear were retrieved following a manhunt led by Kikuyu police officers.

Kiambu County Police Commander Dorris Kemey, the recovery followed a tip about a suspicious individual carrying a bulging bag at Gravity Bar in the Gahui area. Officers responded quickly and aided by forensic leads, identified the suspect.

The firearms are believed to be among four that were taken from Dagoretti Police Station when a group of individuals allegedly posing as protesters stormed the station during the nationwide demonstrations.

Kemey confirmed that the suspects are in custody and will face charges related to illegal possession of firearms and attacking a police facility.

Murkomen to Goons

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen issued a statement following the Gen Z-led memorial protests held on June 25, 2025.

Murkomen noted that he had visited parts of Nairobi to assess the aftermath, with a particular focus on small-scale traders whose businesses were affected during the unrest.

According to Murkomen, hundreds of traders have suffered losses, with many businesses, built over years of dedication, destroyed in a matter of hours.

He sharply criticized those who exploited the demonstrations to engage in violence, looting, and other crimes, including reported cases of sexual assault and vandalism.

Murkomen said government property was also targeted, including at least nine police stations, five of which were set ablaze in areas such as Dagoretti, Molo, and Ol Kalau.

In total, 88 police vehicles, 27 government vehicles, and 65 civilian cars parked within police stations were reportedly destroyed.

He further revealed that several firearms were stolen during the chaos.
