A staff member of Uzima University has been confirmed dead following a road accident along the Kisumu- Kakamega highway involving a 51-seater University bus.
The staff was among 46 passengers, including students who were involved in the Monday, July 6, accident. A police report has detailed that 17 students and 2 staff members were on board the bus from an education trip in Kakamega.
According to St John’s Ambulance, the bus full of students crashed at around 6:00 pm, near Coptic church, Kisumu.

Many of the students sustained injuries and were rushed to hospital.
“At around 6pm, our paramedics and members of the public rescued 46 passengers believed to be students of Uzima University, after their bus was involved in a road accident at Coptic Round about in Kisumu, along the Kisumu-Kakamega Road.”
“We wish them quick recovery,” St John’s Ambulance stated.

Police Report Details Cause of Accident
According to the police, the driver of the University bus lost control around the Coptic hospital area before overturning and landing on its left side.
The overturned bus blocked one side of the road, causing traffic snarl up around the area.
Well-wishers arrived at the scenes shortly after the accident to help rescue the victims. Unfortunately, one female staff member died on the spot.
Another staff member is admitted at the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Teaching and Referral Hospital, while 3 male and 4 female students were already discharged from hospital.

School Bus Crashes in Oyugis
On July 14, a school bus belonging to Kemasare Secondary School was involved in an accident along Oyugis-Kadondo Road at Center junction.
Police reported that the bus was carrying students from two Schools including Nyameru Secondary and Kemasare Secondary on their way to Kisumu on Sunday, July 14, 2024.
Additionally, about 45 students were admitted at the Nyamira Referral Hospital where they are undergoing emergency treatment.
According to reports, the students were headed to the Music Festivals at Kisumu Girls when their school bus was involved in a road accident.
