Fresh details have emerged about a horrific road crash that claimed three lives after a car lost control along Raila Odinga Way, flew onto the Mbagathi Way footbridge in Nairobi, and burst into flames early Saturday morning.
Police said the driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road before mounting the pedestrian footbridge. The impact, police added, sparked a fire that engulfed the vehicle, trapping all three occupants inside.
The driver and two passengers died at the scene, with their bodies burnt beyond recognition.
Residents who witnessed the crash said the vehicle was moving at a high speed moments before the driver lost control, although investigators are yet to determine the exact cause of the accident.
The severity of the fire left the victims’ bodies burnt beyond recognition, complicating efforts to identify them at the scene.
The remains of the three victims were later transferred to the Nairobi Funeral Home, where they await identification and postmortem examinations.

Police also removed the wreckage from the scene and towed it to a police station as investigations into the fatal crash commenced.
Preliminary investigations indicate that the driver lost control before the vehicle left the roadway and landed on the footbridge.
Events Leading to the Mbagathi Way Crash
The vehicle burst into flames after crashing onto a pedestrian footbridge along Mbagathi Way, leaving the car completely burnt and causing visible damage to the structure.
Videos seen by The Kenya Times captured the moments after the crash, showing the wrecked vehicle engulfed in flames while perched on the staircase of the footbridge.
A thick black smoke billowed into the air as firefighters and other emergency responders worked at the scene, while members of the public watched from a distance as the rescue operation unfolded.

The collision damaged part of the footbridge. Sections of the metal handrail along the staircase appeared twisted and torn away, while pieces of the destroyed vehicle and fragments of the damaged structure were strewn across the stairs and nearby ground.
Traffic police officers were deployed to secure the area and manage the scene as emergency teams responded to the incident.
An ambulance also arrived shortly after the crash, although the condition of those involved had not yet been confirmed.
By sunrise, recovery operations were in progress.
Another video recorded later in the morning showed a crane and a recovery truck removing the burnt-out vehicle from the footbridge. The crane carefully lifted the charred wreckage before placing it onto the recovery truck.
Onlookers gathered to witness the recovery exercise as traffic continued moving along sections of Mbagathi Way.
The daylight footage further revealed the extent of the damage to the footbridge, with parts of the staircase’s metal railing left hanging loose following the impact.
