Nestled within the lush landscapes of Indonesia, where whispers of ancient traditions linger in the tropical breeze, lies a village cradled in the embrace of mystique. It is the home to Ayam Cenami.

Here, under the dappled sunlight filtering through towering palms, the Ayam Cenami chickens tread with an elegance that transcends the ordinary.

Their onyx plumage tells a tale of heritage, an enigma passed down through the ages, weaving a narrative that unfolds against the backdrop of verdant hills and the timeless rhythm of rural life.

In this corner of the world, the Ayam Cenami is more than a chicken; it’s a living embodiment of folklore, a feathered guardian of stories waiting to unfurl.

Ayam Cemani History

The Ayam Cemani chicken is a modern and relatively new breed of chicken which originated from Sumatra, Indonesia.

According to Greenfire Farms they were reportedly first imported to Europe in the 1998 by Dutch breeder Jan Steverink.

Also, it is thought that Ayam Cemani may have been brought to Europe by Dutch seamen.

Reports by Demi Farms reveal that their numbers are thought to be below 3,500 worldwide.

Currently, this breed of chicken is kept in the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Slovakia, Sweden, Italy and the Czech Republic.

Demi Farms indicate that Ayam Cemani chickens are very expensive, with prices ranging from $1,000 (Ksh.151,000) to $2,500 (Ksh.377,500) per bird.

This is due to their rarity and their high demand as a status symbol.

Further, the Indonesian chicken breed known as Ayam Cemani takes ‘dark’ into an entirely different realm.

Their feathers, organs and entire skin are black.

Additionally, reports show that if you cut open an Ayam Cemani you will find black muscle anchored to black bones.

Again, this uniqueness makes it one of the most beautiful chickens in the world; a chicken so spectacular and exotic that it is referred to as the “Lamborghini of poultry.”

The reason for these excessive black traits is a result of a fibromelanistic gene.

According to research, this gene is rare and is only seen in a few other chicken breeds.

The fibromelanistic gene causes black pigment or melanin to build up in the skin and connective tissues.

Ayam Cemani Uses

Ayam Cemani are highly sought after and prized for several reasons.

To begin with, their rarity is a significant factor:

For this reason, they are considered one of the rarest chicken breeds globally, making them a symbol of prestige among poultry enthusiasts and gourmands looking to taste something unique.

Furthermore, their striking aesthetic also contributes to their allure, as they stand out in any flock of chickens.

In Asia, Ayam Cemani are renowned as much for the mystical powers of their black meat as they are for their extraordinary ink-black feathers that shimmer with a metallic sheen of beetle green and purple.

Besides, the Ayam Cemani chicken has probably been used for centuries for religious and mystical purpose in the island of Java, Indonesia.

Respected individuals in Indonesia have these birds as status symbols and take great care of them.

They are thought of as good luck charms, with the blood and other parts of the bird being used in traditional medicinal preparations.

Also, some reports show that Ayam Cemani has magical powers and facilitates communication between the living and the spirit world.

As such, it is used as a sacrificial bird to appease the gods. Its’ flesh is rarely eaten in Indonesia.

Ayam Cemani Meat

Ayam Cemani chickens aren’t just revered for their striking appearance.

Happy Chicken Coop says the flavor of their meat is generally not commented on much, though some say it has a slightly gamey flavor, if otherwise unremarkable.

But the meat’s dark color adds a sense of mystique to the dining experience, and the power of visual suggestion leads some diners to insist it has a savorier taste than you’d expect.

Of course, regular chickens, such as the common broiler or heritage breeds like Rhode Island Reds, offer a more familiar flavor profile.

However, these chickens are known for their mild and versatile taste, making them a staple in cuisines worldwide.

Also, the meat is often described as tender, juicy, and mild, allowing it to adapt well to various cooking styles and flavorings.

Ayam Cemani meat potentially offers a unique flavor experience, making it a standout choice for special occasions and adventurous palates.
