The Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry has announced the immediate suspension of exports of raw veneer materials.
In a press release issued on August 27, Environment Cabinet Secretary (CS) Aden Duale said that this decision takes effect immediately.
He further directed the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) not to authorize any exports through the issuance of a “no objection letter.”
Additionally, CS Duale noted that this action is part of the government’s commitment to the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy, which aims to restore 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by planting 15 billion trees.
“This suspension is a resolute measure in support of the National Landscape and Ecosystem Restoration Strategy,” said Duale.

Raw veneer refers to thin sheets of wood that have been sliced or peeled from logs, typically measuring less than one-eighth of an inch thick.
This type of veneer is characterized by its natural appearance, showcasing the unique grain patterns of the wood.
Raw veneer is popular in furniture making and construction, offering the beauty of solid wood at a lower cost while minimizing waste and promoting sustainability.
Concerns Over Premature Harvesting Practices
He further stated that the government is responding to concerns about the premature harvesting of immature trees, which the CS notes undermine reforestation efforts.
“Recent reports have highlighted the premature harvesting of immature trees on farmlands, a practice that threatens the success of the government’s reforestation efforts,” explained the CS.
Through this suspension, the government aims to ensure that trees are allowed to fully mature, ultimately supporting the goal of achieving 30% tree cover by 2032.

“By halting the export of raw veneer, the government intends to curb this practice, ensuring trees are allowed to mature and contribute effectively to the national restoration goals.”
Duale reiterated the government’s commitment achieving the set target of 30% tree cover by 2032, noting that the suspension was a necessary step towards safeguarding the nation’s environmental future.
“The government’s commitment to achieving the ambitious 30% tree cover by 2032 is unwavering. The suspension is necessary to safeguard Kenya’s environmental future and should inspire all stakeholders to join us in this crucial endeavor,” remarked the CS.
