The United States of America, Canada, and Mexico have announced health travel measures for all individuals traveling from African countries considered at high risk for Ebola ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
In a joint press release issued on Friday, May 29, the three nations stated that the measures aim to protect their citizens and the millions of fans, athletes, and officials expected to attend the one-month-long tournament, which they’ll jointly host for the first time in the history of football.
“This coordinated approach aims to protect our citizens and the millions of visitors, fans, athletes, and tourists expected during the FIFA World Cup 2026, while maintaining travel and commerce across our borders,” read part of the statement.
The governments further stated that “the health and safety of every person in the region remains our highest priority as we welcome the world to North America.”
The United States is expected to host a total of 78 matches while Mexico and Canada will each host 13.
The three countries emphasized that the measures are a precaution and are designed to control the possible infection and spread of the Ebola virus during international travel to this year’s FIFA World Cup this July.
Ebola virus has no cure, and the Democratic Republic of Congo has reported more than one hundred cases and hundreds of confirmed cases. Its neighbor, Uganda, with a handful of cases, shut the border in a bid to curb the spread of the virus.
