The Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has announced three electricity cost adjustments affecting Kenya Power customers.
In a gazette notice dated October 9, the authority set fuel energy cost charges at KSh 3.22 per unit.
“Pursuant to Clause 1 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023, notice is given that all prices for electrical energy specified in Part II of the said Schedule will be liable to a fuel energy cost charge of plus 3.22 Kenya cents per kWh for all meter readings to be taken in October 2026,” part of the notice read.
The fuel charge increased from KSh 3.00 per unit announced in September.
EPRA Director-General Edward M. Kinyua explained that the authority used power station fuel prices, fuel displacement charges and the electricity units generated and purchased in September 2026 to calculate the adjustment.
In September 2026, the total electrical energy generated and purchased, excluding exports, stood at 1,358,089,407 kWh.
The data also covered thermal power stations, geothermal steam charges, electricity imports and other generating stations supplying the national grid and isolated power systems.

Forex Adjustment Set at 87 Cents per kWh
EPRA set the foreign exchange fluctuation adjustment at plus 87 cents per kWh for meter readings taken in September 2026.
EPRA based the adjustment on foreign exchange gains and losses recorded by KenGen, Kenya Power and independent power producers.
Forex recorded a total net exchange loss of KSh 987,557,779.72.
KenGen recorded an exchange gain of KSh 92.74 million, while Kenya Power recorded an exchange loss of KSh 254.83 million.
Independent power producers recorded the largest listed loss at KSh 825.47 million.
The total units generated and purchased, excluding exports, used in the calculation were 1,358,089,407 kWh in September 2026.
EPRA on WRMA Levy
EPRA set the Water Resource Management Authority levy at 1.34 cents per kWh for all meter readings taken in October 2026 pursuant to Clause 5 of Part III of the Schedule of Tariffs 2023.
The WRMA levy declined slightly from 1.48 cents set by the authority in September, leading to an adjustment of the levy for electricity purchased from hydropower plants with a capacity of 1 MW or more to five Kenya cents per kWh.
