Equity Group Holding Plc has announced a change in its board of directors, specifically its board of directors, following the retirement of Mary Wangari Wamae.
In a notice shared on June 29, the company announced the retirement of Mrs. Mary Wangari Wamae as a director of the Company, with effect from June 28, 2024.
Mary leaves the Board of Directors of the Company on early retirement after an illustrious career in the banking industry.
She joined Equity Group twenty years ago in 2004 and rose through the ranks to become the Group Executive Director in 2017, overseeing the company’s subsidiaries.
Wamae has held various positions within the company including Head of Legal, Company Secretary, Head of Investor Relations, and Director of Strategy.

“In 2017 she was appointed as the Group Executive Director and assigned the responsibility to oversee Equity Group subsidiaries, the first person to hold the position, whereupon she became a Board member in Equity Group Holdings Plc and its subsidiaries,” read the statement.
Mary Wamae’s List of Achievements
Mary was recognized for her contributions to the banking and finance industry, winning the 2021 Angaza Award: Women to Watch in Banking & Finance, as well as the 2021 Women on Board Award.
In 2023, she was also named the Private Sector Lawyer of the Year by the Nairobi Legal Awards for her contribution to the legal fraternity in her 33 years as an advocate of the High Court of Kenya.

She also received Certification in Women in Leadership from the University of Oxford.
In a statement, Prof. Isaac Macharia, the company group chairman, expressed his gratitude to Wamae for her dedication and commitment to the company during her tenure.

Mary Wamae’s Farewell Message to Equity Group
In a heartfelt farewell message posted on her social media platforms, Wamae reflected on her 20-year journey with the company.
“What an incredible journey it has been! I can only say it was an honor and privilege for me to serve in Equity Bank Limited in various capacities,” she said.
Additionally, she expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to be part of the company’s growth from a small building society to a globally acclaimed banking and financial services group.
“I was so happy to be a part of the incredible journey of transformation from a small Building society to the globally acclaimed Banking and Financial Services Group that Equity Group Holdings Plc has now become.”
Also, she thanked the company’s leadership, customers, colleagues, partners, regulators, and the communities for their support throughout her successful tenure
As Wamae embarks on the next chapter of her life, she expressed her excitement for the future, saying, “Every new beginning comes from some other beginning’s end.”
