Equity Bank has cautioned its customers to beware of simple tricks that fraudsters use to con unsuspecting members of the public.
With various scams on the rise, it’s crucial for Kenyans to be aware of potential threats and take proactive measures to protect oneself.
In a notice to customers on Thursday May 2 Equity bank encouraged its ‘members’ to stay vigilant and remain aware and up to date with the current and evolving tactics used by fraudsters to try and prey on them.
In their campaign dubbed “Kaa Rada! Tuchanuane Njaro za wakora” loosely translated to Stay Alert! Let’s Discuss the Tactics of Fraudsters” the bank shared three tactics fraudsters use in conning individuals’ money in banks.
Equity Bank Shares Tricks Scammers Use
Here are a few scenarios to look out for:
1. Fraudulent SMSs: Fraudsters often send deceptive text messages, claiming urgent needs for money transfer or offering false promises of new services.
These messages may include “Tuma ile pesa kwa hii number” or tuko na new account ya kulipia rent translated to “send money to this number” or “we have a new account for rent payment.”
They end up defrauding you with your hard-earned cash.

2. Fraudulent callers: Scammers may impersonate Equity bank Staff calling pretending to offer assistance with Equitel line upgrade or Equity Mobile app update.
Through convincing tactics, they manipulate the victims and, in the process, guide them to send out money to them unknowingly.
3. Imposters: Some fraudsters go to lengths to pose as legitimate service providers, visiting homes or markets under false pretenses.
They visit homes or markets posing as staff from Equitel or other companies like Equity Afia, NHIF etc. out to register you for services. They ask for your phone and in the process, they steal your Sim cards and access your bank accounts and mobile wallets.

Kenyans Warned of Bank Fraudsters
Equity Bank further emphasized that all legitimate calls from the bank originate from the number 0763 000 000, and genuine SMS messages display the sender ID as Equity Bank or Equitel.
Individuals have been encouraged to report any suspicious calls or messages by forwarding the details to 333.
As the end of the month approaches, fraudsters may become more desperate in their attempts to deceive.
It’s essential for everyone to remain vigilant and cautious to safeguard their finances and personal information from falling into the hands of criminals.
