Equity Group CEO James Mwangi Joins American Think Tank

Dr. James Mwangi, Group Managing Director and CEO of Equity Group Holdings, has been appointed to the Global Board of Advisors of the Council on Foreign Relations (CFR).

The Council on Foreign Relations is an independent and nonpartisan think tank founded in 1921 and is focused on US foreign policy and international relations.

In a statement on Wednesday, January 15, James Mwangi acknowledged the appointment, expressing his commitment to championing a positive African narrative. 

“I am honoured to have been asked to join the Council on Foreign Relations Global Board of Advisors and am grateful for the chance to bring a positive African narrative to the discussions,” said the equity CEO.

Mwangi added that the appointment will be of great impact to Africa as it presents an opportunity for collaboration with other countries around the world.

“The chance to explain Africa’s contributions to the world now and for decades to come as the continent takes its place on the global stage will mean greater productive collaborations for countries around the world to sustainably partner with the people of Africa,” he added.

Equity Group CEO James Mwangi Joins Aliko Dangote and Other Leaders 

With offices in New York City and Washington DC, the organization boasts a distinguished membership comprising senior government officials, business leaders, academics, and prominent media personalities.

CFR also publishes the esteemed journal Foreign Affairs.

The Equity CEO now joins an illustrious group of leaders on the board, including David M. Rubenstein, Co-Founder and Co-Chairman of The Carlyle Group and Chairman of CFR’s Board of Directors; Michael Froman, President of CFR. 

Prominent figures such as Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Group (Nigeria) are also on the board. 

Other members of the board include Julie Bishop, Chancellor of Australian National University (Australia), and Helle Thorning-Schmidt, former Prime Minister of Denmark.

Mo Ibrahim, Founder and Chairman of the Mo Ibrahim Foundation and Sunil Bharti Mittal, Founder and Chairman of Bharti Enterprises (India) are also members of the board.

What Does the Board Do?

The Global Board of Advisors (GBA), now in its twelfth year, enhances CFR’s understanding of diverse international perspectives and fosters dialogue between U.S. leaders and their global counterparts.

The board brings together influential policymakers, business executives, and civil society leaders from 25 countries to offer insights on key geopolitical and economic issues.

However, there is a CFR Africa Program, a key initiative within the organization, that seeks to deepen understanding of political, security, and economic issues on the continent.

Through its blog Africa in Transition and various roundtables on strategic opportunities, political transitions, and partnerships, the program informs policymakers, business leaders, and academics.

Also, senior fellows in the program publish extensively and lecture widely on African affairs.
