Renowned comedian and activist Eric Omondi has initiated a signature collection campaign aimed at reducing the number of elected officials and counties.
Speaking during a press conference at Serena Hotel on August 20, Eric Omondi announced plans to gather one million signatures in support of a referendum that would initiate significant changes in the country’s administration system.
He explained that he aims to cut the number of counties from 47 to 8 through this initiative and abolish nominated leaders, including MPs, MCAs, women representatives and senators.
“We are here to launch the referendum to reduce the number of counties and elected officials, we are going to reduce the number of counties from 47 to 8, we are going to abolish nominated leaders including MPs, MCAs and Senators.”
“We are also going to abolish the Senate in its entirety as well as the position of women rep,” he said.
Kenya Is Overrepresented
Omondi criticized the current political structure, stating that Kenyans are overrepresented, with one citizen having multiple representatives doing the same thing.

“Kenya is overrepresented, with one person being represented by the president, deputy president, governor, deputy governor, MP, senator, woman representative, MCA, regional commissioner, county commissioner, assistant county commissioner, chief, subchief, and village elder,” he noted.
“A single Kenyan is represented by 16 people doing the same thing,” Eric said.
Additionally, the comedian compared Kenya’s governance to that of the United States, noting that the U.S. has fewer government officials despite having a larger population compared to Kenya.
Eric Omondi Stresses the Need to Ease Taxpayer Burden
He emphasized the need to ease the taxpayer burden caused by overlapping government roles, arguing that the existing system does not effectively devolve services as intended.
“Taxpayers are carrying the burden of paying for offices that are overlapping, the Intention was to devolve services, but we ended up devolving corruption,” said Eric.
