The ex-Mungiki leader Maina Njenga has said that the people calling themselves ‘Mau Mau’ are responsible for his woes.
Speaking outside the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters offices on Thursday May 25, Maina said the people trying to get him arrested were responsible for destroying the Mt Kenya unity.
“Those special people that are calling themselves Mau Mau are the people responsible for our arrest.
“They are the people who are destroying our unity. They are the people who are bringing all this persecution because they are looking for the seniority of our Mountain, but power belongs to the people,” Njenga stated.
Njenga was released on a free bond, after his supporters spent the day chanting for his release outside the DCI offices.
Police officers ended up lobbying teargas at the growing crowd.
Njenga’s lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, also noted that his client Maina Njenga was charged with 12 counts.
“The charge sheet was clear that he was being accused of being a member of Mungiki.
“Number two, he was being accused of recruiting people to Mungiki,” Njiru stated.

Earlier in the week, DCI officers in Nakuru had followed a lead, after two firearms and 90 rolls of bhang were found at a home linked to Maina.
“In the raid conducted at Ngomongo village in Dundori ward, the officers who arrested 8 suspects aged between 37 and 54 also found three rounds of 9mm blank ammunition hidden in one of the rooms. One of the firearms recovered was a homemade pistol capable of firing while the other one was a Tokarev whose serial number had been defaced,” the DCI had said in a statement then.
