Former Standard Group Deputy Managing Editor and Journalist Peter Okong’o has died.
His former colleagues at Standard Group and friends from various organizations have mourned his death, saying they learnt of his demise on Thursday, October 31, morning.

Okong’o served at the Mombasa Road-based media house for seven years and four months from 2011, before moving to the Central Bank of Kenya as a consultant.
Masoku Geoffrey has eulogized Okong’o, remembering him as a fine gentleman and a good editor.

“My former colleague at Standard Group Peter Okong’o has been called home. He was a fine gentleman and a good editor. Go thee well brother and pole to the family,” Masoku stated.

At the same time, Catherine Riungu and Wilfred Ayaga have mourned the death of the journalist, remembering him for his work at the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board.
“Peter Okong’o, how now? Just the other day you were stressing the Kenya Yearbook writers with deadlines, your last call to me was, ‘Catherine, we are not waiting for you to get done with your flower show, I want my stories in today;
“At NMG business desk, you were an ever-smiling editor, extremely supportive of writers. I am told at SG you carried yourself with esteem. Go well colleague, ” Catherine Riungu added.
“A good man has rested. Peter Okong’o, a former editor at the Standard Group has left us. You treated me well when I was still finding my feet in the newsroom. May you find favour with the Lord and may your family be comforted,” Wilfred Ayaga noted.

Career and Work Life
Okong’o has had a vast career in the media industry following his Journalism postgraduate education from the University of Nairobi in 1996.
His work in the mainstream media began in 2003 when he joined Nation Media Group as a business desk editor. However, he left the station in 2008 to join Standard Group Media.
Okong’o served at the station as a Senior Associate Business Editor until 2011, when he was promoted to Deputy Managing Editor for the daily editions.
In December 2015, he left Standard Group to become a technical advisor on communications consultant at the Central Bank of Kenya (CBK).
Moreover, in 2019 February, the journalist joined the Kenya Yearbook Editorial Board. He also worked at Mediamax beginning in June 2019 as a consulting editor and Special Business Correspondent for People Daily.
He has served in other organizations in a consulting capacity including Deutsche Welle Akademie, International Association of Professional Writers and Editors, and Gina Din Group.
