Ruto Pledges 40K Displaced Families Ksh10,000 Each for Rent

President William Ruto has announced that families evicted by the government due to floods will receive Ksh10,000 each.

Speaking in Mathare, Ruto said the families will use the funds to seek alternative houses for the next three months as the government looks for a permanent solution.

“Every household that has been displaced in Nairobi County will be paid Ksh10,000 so that they find alternative accommodation so that we can plan for their future as a government so that every Kenyan can have a place to call home,” Ruto said.

Ruto said the government has a list of all the families that were relocated by the government and are entitled to the stipend.

“Those who have lost properties, I want to assure you that we will provide you with alternative houses since you moved out willingly,” the president said.

Contruction of Affordable Housing Units in Affected Estates

He directed Housing PS Charles Hinga to commence the affordable housing programme in Mathare.

Ruto further said the government will start the construction of 5,000 houses in Kiamaiko where the evacuated families will be hosted.

“Before Friday, are going advertise for the constructions of 20,000 housing units between Kibra, Kimaiko and Mwiki so that we can begin the process of making these slum dwellers homeowners in the republic of Kenya,” he said.

He announced that the residents will only pay Ksh3,000 to own the houses in a rent-to-buy agreement once the construction is complete.

He explained that raising the cap to 25 and 30 floors will provide more accommodation to Nairobi residents, especially slum dwellers.

Ruto maintained that even the slum dweller deserves better living conditions just like the other Kenyans.

“Since I am the Commander in Chief, I have said that in Eastleigh, you couldn’t build a house beyond 12 floors but now we can build storey buildings of up to 25 or 30 floors so that all the citizens can get accommodation and live in a harmonious neighborhood,” he stated.
