President William Ruto’s aide, Farouk Kibet has proposed that the activists detained and deported from Tanzania should be jailed for exporting bad manners to the neighbouring country.
Speaking in South Mugirango Constituency on May 22, 2025, Kibet criticised the group of activists who had travelled to Tanzania to attend court proceedings involving Tanzania’s opposition leader and Chadema party leader, Tundu Lissu.
“They are now displaying bad behaviour in Tanzania. We want to respect our neighbours. Should those people with bad manners be jailed or not?” Farouk asked.
Further, he stated that Kenya remains committed to peaceful coexistence and strengthening good neighbourly relations within the East African Community.

Additionally, Ruto’s aide, claimed that the activists are causing trouble in Tanzania because they fear facing Ruto in the 2027 elections.
He accused the deported activists of diverting their attention from President Ruto to intentionally incite trouble for Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu.
“Why can’t they come here to South Mugirango and sell their manifesto? They have seen that they cannot compete with Ruto, so now they are causing trouble for Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu. We want peace with our neighbours,” he added.
Uproar From Pan-African leaders
The Pan-African Progressive Leaders’ Solidarity Network condemned the disappearance of Ugandan activist Agather Atuhaire and the reported torture and illegal deportation of Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi by Tanzanian authorities.
The network called for immediate investigations into the incidents and urged Tanzania to respect human rights and uphold regional cooperation within the East African Community.
Further, the leaders called on the African Union Commission (AUC) to activate human rights monitoring mechanisms and to formally request permission to investigate the allegations of illegal detention and torture involving Agather Atuhaire and Boniface Mwangi.

Agather Atuhaire Released
Ugandan journalist and governance advocate Agather Atuhaire was found days after she went missing following her detention in Tanzania.
She had been detained in Tanzania after she was arrested alongside Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi earlier this week,
Agather had reportedly travelled to Tanzania on various engagements, including attending a court session involving the country’s opposition leader Tundu Lissu.

Boniface Mwangi Release
Kenyan activist Boniface Mwangi was on his part released earlier on Thursday, following his detention by suspected military officers in Tanzania who arrested him after travelling there on Monday, May 19, to observe the treason trial of Tundu Lissu.
He was detained alongside Atuhaire, with his whereabouts remaining unknown until when he was deported from Tanzania by road and abandoned near Ukunda in Kwale County.
Following his release, he was rushed to a local hospital in the County for a medical review before moving to the Moi International Airport ahead of his scheduled flight to Nairobi.
Several Kenyans have been deported by President Samia Suluhu’s administration while attempting to attend Tundu Lissu’s trial, including People’s Liberation Party Leader Martha Karua, former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga, Vocal Africa CEO Hussein Khalid, and human rights activist Hanifa Adan.
