A Police Officer is among suspects arrested by the Ethics and Anti-corruption (EACC) detectives for defrauding members of the public while impersonating Anti-Corruption detectives.
EACC in a statement on July 20 said that the serving police officer was among five fraudsters believed to be part of a criminal gang that has been defrauding public officials in Kitui town.
The five, who have been posing as EACC detectives carrying out investigations, were nabbed while conducting a fake search operation, according to the Anti-Corruption Commission.
“Five fraudsters, including a serving police officer, believed to be part of a criminal gang that has been defrauding unsuspecting public officials while posing as EACC detectives carrying out investigations, have been arrested. The five were nabbed on Friday while undertaking a ‘search operation’ in Kitui County Government,” read part of the statement.
According to EACC, the five had raided the residence of Kitui County Director of Revenue, purporting to be investigating alleged embezzlement of funds.

The Commission said that it received a tipoff from the local OCPD in which it confirmed that the individuals were imposters and not staff of the EACC.
Police Officer Among Suspects Nabbed by EACC
Further, EACC said that the suspects have been deceiving unsuspecting public officials by promising to manipulate investigations in their favour.
“The suspects, who were driving a white Toyota Fielder motor vehicle of Reg. No. KDC 846X, are: 1. CPL Anne Mutheu, aged 46, a Police officer attached to Muthangari Police Station 2. Sheddy Kakai aged 37 3. Permelus Kasama, aged 48 4. Joseph Musembi aged 34 5. David Bembe, aged 33,” added EACC.
The Anti-Corruption Commission said that the suspects were caught by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI).

When caught by DCI Officers who responded to the complainant’s distress call, the suspects purportedly produced a ‘search warrant’ supposedly issued at Milimani Law Courts.
In addition, they produced job cards in the names of three other Kenyans, designated as Chief Executive Officer and Director of Anti-corruption Intelligence, EACC.
The suspects are currently detained at Kitui Police Station pending further action.
County Official Nabbed
Meanwhile, the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested the head of Land Survey in Kericho County Government, Ismail Kipngeno Koskei.
Koskei was apprehended by EACC detectives after demanding Ksh200,000 from a member of the public to facilitate a land transaction.
The Commission in a statement said that the complainant’s plot, registered in the name of their late mother, had been incorrectly combined with Brooke Market County Council of Kipsigis.
“The Land Survey office separated the plot from Brooke Market, but the suspect insisted on a Ksh200,000 bribe to release the new title.
Koskei was nabbed in his office in Kericho after he received Kes.100,000 as the initial deposit for the demanded Kes.200,000 bribe,” read part of the statement.
He was taken to EACC South Rift Regional Offices in Nakuru, where he recorded a statement and is currently detained at Nakuru Central Police Station.
