A raging wildfire has broken out in the forests within the Maasai Mara National Reserve causing extensive damage to vegetation and trees planted as part of conservation efforts.
The fire, whose cause remains unknown, has raised concerns among the local government and park officials.

However, officials from the county government of Narok have indicated that first responders are working with park rangers, conservationists, and local volunteers on the scene to put out the spreading fire.
Daniel Kimkong’, an official with the National Reserve has assured Kenyans that the fire is being contained.

How Did Maasai Mara Wildfire Start
According to witnesses, the fire started in a remote part of the reserve and quickly spread because of strong winds in the area.

Consequently, authorities are investigating the possible causes of the fire.
The Maasai Mara, famous for its annual wildebeest migration and diverse wildlife, plays a crucial role in Kenya’s tourism industry.
Any destruction to its ecosystem will cause a threat to wildlife, and impact the livelihoods of local communities.
The news comes days after another wildfire broke out on a grassland fire inside the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA), along Airport North Road, Nairobi County.
However, the Kenya Red Cross and the Nairobi Fire Department were able to contain the blaze and prevent further spread.
Also, on February 19, a wildfire was reported in Madogashe, Eresaburu and Gurufu along the Isiolo-Garissa border.

Kariobangi Night Fire
On a separate event, fire broke out at Kariobangi Light Industries on Sunday. February 23, razing several business premises and two schools.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the fire spread for nine hours before first responders were able to contain it.
10 people suffered minor injuries and were attended to by the Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with St. John Ambulance.
“A total of 17 people were attended to by the Kenya Red Cross in collaboration with other response agencies. Our teams have since concluded response efforts and held a debrief session,” the Kenya Red Cross stated on Monday, February 24, morning.
