Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has backed the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s sentiments, calling on President William Ruto to compensate victims who were killed and abducted at the height of Gen Z protests.
While speaking at a church service at AIPCA Gatumbi Church, Lari Constituency in Kiambu County, Gachagua called on the President to have a discussion with the family of the victims.
“I want President William Ruto to discuss with the victims of all the parents whose children were abducted and killed, you call them, you give an apology to them and discuss compensation with them,” Gachagua stated.
Gachagua Urges Ruto to Compensate Gen Z Victims’ Families
Gachagua urged the President not to speak casually, referring to the apology the President made during the National Prayer Breakfast, where he asked Gen Zs to forgive him if his government had made any missteps, implying that forgiveness alone is not enough.
“Don’t just talk casually; this is about human life. Call the families of the victims and compensate them,” Gachagua stated.

At the same time the former Deputy President called on President Ruto to compensate the families of the victims who were burnt in Kiamba church during 2007/ 2008 post election violence.
“I have been asked by the people to tell you also to remember those children who were burned at Kiambaa; call their parents as well. Apologize to them and then discuss compensation,” added Gachagua.
Raila Calls for Compensation of Victims
The former Deputy President’s sentiments come hours after former Prime Minister Raila Odinga told the President during the Madaraka Day celebrations at Raila Odinga Stadium in Homa Bay County that his government should compensate the families and victims of Gen Z who died during the 2024 anti-Finance Bill protests.
“I saw that during the National Prayer Breakfast, there were apologies that were made, which was wonderful. The people who died and were injured during the Gen Z protest, I want to say that we should do compensation so that we can have closure on this chapter, “said Odinga.
President William Ruto apologized to Gen Z during the National Prayer Breakfast in Nairobi on May 28, 2025. He addressed the youth’s frustrations after the government violently responded to protests against the 2024 Finance Bill.

These protests were sparked by high taxes, rising living costs, and unfulfilled campaign promises.
The violent response led to about 60 deaths and 32 abductions reported, with some activists still missing.
Ruto’s apology came after U.S. preacher Rickey Allen Bolden urged for reconciliation. He said, “To our children, if there has been any misstep, we apologize. We want to build a relationship with you that will make our country great.”
