The Registrar of Companies has announced the dissolution of two firms — multinational oil and motor care company Caltex House Service Station Limited and Bora Motors Limited.
In a gazette notice dated October 31, Deputy Registrar of Companies Hiram Gachugi stated that the companies’ names have been removed from the register of companies.
“Pursuant to section 897 (4) of the Companies Act, it is notified for the information of the general public that the following companies are dissolved and their names have been struck off the Register of Companies with effect from the date of publication of this notice. Bora Motors Limited and Caltex House Service Station Limited,” read the notice in part.
Caltex has over 75 years of service and operates 165 service stations.

According to its website, the company offered a range of high-performance lubricants and engine oils designed to ensure optimal engine performance under all driving conditions.
The company, which previously operated under the Caltex brand, underwent significant changes following its acquisition by Total Kenya in 2009.
As part of the acquisition, the Competition Authority of Kenya required Total Kenya to divest certain assets, including service stations in towns such as Bungoma, Eldoret, and Litein.
These stations were later sold to the National Oil Corporation of Kenya (NOCK) and other buyers, marking a major shift in the company’s operations.
Caltex, originally known as the California Texas Oil Company, was founded in 1936 as a joint venture between Standard Oil of California (now Chevron Corporation) and The Texas Company (later Texaco).

The company rapidly expanded across Asia, the Middle East, and Africa, establishing itself as a major global player in oil refining, marketing, and distribution.
It became widely recognised for its network of retail fuel stations, lubricants, and petroleum products.
In Kenya and much of East Africa, Caltex was a key player in the petroleum retail market for several decades before being acquired by Total Kenya in 2009 as part of Chevron’s global restructuring efforts.
Following the acquisition, the Caltex brand was gradually phased out, with many of its service stations rebranded under the Total name.
