The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has listed seven tips that Kenyans can use to avoid hyena attacks as it attempts to reduce deaths by the killer animal.
In recent past, KWS has been in search of the wild scavenger after several reports of attacks and deaths by Hyenas, especially in Juja.
As such, the wildlife authority wants Kenyans to remain alert and ensure their safety, even when they come face to face with hyenas in their neighborhoods.
It has therefore listed seven tips that Kenyans can use when they come face to face with the scavenger, to help them escape attacks.
“At times, hyenas can attack people and in case of an encounter with one, it is advisable to counter the attack through use of safety tips,” noted KWS.

Seven Tips to Escape Hyena Attack
Stop, don’t run. According to KWS, as a predator, hyenas will instinctively chase animals which run away. Therefore it is important that one does not run when they encounter the animal.
Secondly, don’t lie down or pretend to be dead. The wildlife service explained that lying down increases the curiosity of the animal.
Thirdly, the wildlife authority advised Kenyans to try not to show your fear. This, it noted, will save one from an attack.
“Keep yourself calm by talking to it,” added KWS.
Additionally, KWS advised Kenyans to minimize movements at night as hyenas are nocturnal animals.
Also, Kenyans were advised not to move away until the hyena does.
“Don’t move away until the hyena does and when you do, continue to face its direction,” explained the statement.
The sixth tip was stand one’s ground even if the animal growls or giggles. However, KWS advised against moving any closer to the animal.
Finally, the wildlife service advised one to make a loud noise, look aggressive and frightening as if they are going to attack the animal.

KWS on Facts About the Hyena
KWS explained that hyenas are useful scavengers that clean the ecosystem by getting rid of discarded bones and debris thus preventing the spread of zoonotic diseases.
Also, it is important to note that a hyena is lazy and prefers scavenging easy meals example consuming dead meat rather than chasing prey.
“During the day, they can be spotted staring at the sky, taking cues from circling vultures as their own unique GPS system to locate a kill,” added the statement.
