The Nursing Council of Kenya (NCK) has issued an official notice outlining updated requirements for the indexing of nursing and midwifery students, a move that directly affects both trainees and training institutions across the country and beyond.
In the notice on Monday, August 25, the council noted that indexing—the formal registration and tracking of students pursuing nursing and midwifery qualifications—is mandatory and must be completed according to clearly defined criteria depending on the category of training.
“The Nursing Council of Kenya hereby notifies all trainees and training institutions of the official requirements for indexing,” read the statement.
The guidelines have been grouped into four categories based on the nature and location of training. These include Basic, Upgrading, and Higher Diploma programmes (all in Kenya), and programmes for students trained outside Kenya.
Indexing for nursing and midwifery students trained in Kenya – basic programmes
Students enrolled in basic nursing or midwifery training programmes in Kenya must meet the following requirements:
- Online submission of the applicant by the approved training institution
- Completion of the indexing application by the student
- Meeting the entry criteria for the specific programme as outlined on the NCK website

Indexing for students in upgrading programmes
This applies to qualified nurses or midwives advancing their qualifications:
- Submission of details online by the approved institution
- Student must complete their indexing application
- Fulfillment of entry criteria for the upgrading programme as per NCK’s standards
Indexing for Higher Diploma programmes
For those pursuing higher diploma training, such as in specialized fields:
- Online submission by the approved institution
- The student must complete the indexing application
- Entry requirements specific to each diploma programme must be met (criteria available on the NCK website)

Indexing for students trained outside Kenya
More detailed documentation is required for foreign-trained nurses and midwives, including:
- A duly filled NTOK application for registration form (available on the NCK website)
- Duly filled general nursing/midwifery verification statement from training school (form available on the NCK website)
- Duly filled validation of registration/license form from the relevant regulatory authority (where applicable)
- Meet entry criteria for specific programme (based on the NCK approved training competencies – to be assessed by NCK)
- Equation of qualifications by the Kenya National Qualification Authority (KNQA), where applicable
- Official translation of documents if not in English, by a recognized embassy
Additional requirements for university degree holders
According to NCK, students holding a university degree must also obtain recognition and equivalence of qualifications from the Commission for University Education (CUE).
