Government employees will receive a salary boost beginning in July following a directive by President William Ruto to review remuneration and benefits across the public sector.
Speaking during the Public Service Week celebrations at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) on June 23, Public Service Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku said the planned adjustments will apply to civil servants throughout the country.
“The President of Kenya and his government have ensured that all public servants’ salaries were increased in January 2026, and it was backdated to July 2025. Again, the government is increasing the salaries of public servants in July, including gross pay, house allowance, and commuter allowance,” stated Ruku.

The CS noted that the latest adjustment follows an earlier salary review implemented in January and is intended to improve the welfare and motivation of public servants.

Ruku urged government employees to reciprocate the government’s support by enhancing service delivery to Kenyans.
“We have no reason whatsoever not to put our best foot forward in serving the people of the Republic of Kenya so that we can have one of the most efficient public services on the continent and in the world,” he stated.
In addition to the salary announcement, Ruku revealed that President William Ruto has directed all government institutions to migrate to a single payroll management system, the Human Resource Information System (HRIS).
The directive will apply to ministries, county governments, state agencies, and government departments that receive funding from the national government.
Ruku warned that institutions that fail to comply with the order within one month risk being locked out of government salary payments.
“The President has directed that all ministries, county governments, agencies, and departments that receive salaries from the Government of Kenya must be on one payroll platform. Any institution that does not comply within one month will not be paid,” he said.

Speaking during the 60th Labour Day celebrations held at Chavakali Boys High School on May 1, the President announced that general workers would receive a 12 percent wage increase, while employees in the agricultural sector would benefit from a higher adjustment of 15 percent.
Ruto said the decision was intended to recognize the dedication, resilience, and critical role Kenyan workers continue to play in driving economic growth and national development.
The announcement followed calls from Francis Atwoli, who had appealed for a larger wage review of at least 23 percent. Atwoli argued that improved pay would help workers cope with rising living costs while strengthening support for the government.
He pointed to previous wage increases implemented during the administration of Mwai Kibaki as evidence that significant salary adjustments can have positive outcomes.
However, the proposal faced opposition from the Federation of Kenya Employers, which cautioned against additional wage increases, raising concerns over the financial burden on businesses and employers.
