Police in Nakuru are pursuing a convict serving a life sentence at the Nakuru GK prison who escaped from the Nakuru level five Hospital on Monday, June 3, 2024.
According to reports, Samuel Cheruiyot was admitted at the facility on June 2 with a broken arm and was awaiting to undergo surgery in the course of the week.
It was reported that the 29-year-old who disappeared from the facility is still on the run.
Speaking to the media, Dr. Samuel Waweru, MED Superintendent, Nakuru Level Five Hospital said the suspect’s ward was near the fence and he could have probably walked through the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) that borders the facility.
“The orthopedic ward is next to the fence that is near the KMTC, so he escaped through the KMTC,” Dr. Waweru said.
Cheruiyot is said to have escaped around 02:00 a.m. despite his hand and leg being handcuffed to the bed.
“He had two handcuffs, one of the handcuffs was attached to the arm and the other handcuff was attached to the leg. But only one was found, the one that was attached to the arms,” Waweru added.
Convict Patients Security
It is still unclear how the life sentence prisoner managed to evade the warden attached to him despite being under 24 hours surveillance.
Besides, questions are still rife on who helped in the removal of his handcuffs.
Dr. Waweru explained that such patients are normally escorted to toilets and washrooms, adding that it is not clear how he escaped.

“Maybe he went to the toilet. I don’t know the circumstances under which he escaped because usually they are supposed to be escorted to the toilet by the wardens,” he said.
Since the incident, prison warders have been patrolling the hospital premises as a manhunt for Cheruiyot continues.

Kangethe’s Case
This incident is similar to when Kelvin Kangethe, the man suspected of killing his girlfriend in the United States, escaped from police custody at Muthaiga Police Station on February 9.
However, Kang’ethe was rearrested on February 13 in Ngong, Kajiado County by the DCI’s Special Operations Unit after a five-day manhunt.
