Kenyan students without the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) or those with a foreign primary certificate can still sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
According to the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), these students can undertake the KCSE only if they take the KCSE Qualifying Test (QT).
The KCSE Qualifying Test is a proficiency test measuring candidates’ ability to sit for the KCSE examination.
The examination is taken in one day during the month of November.
It is open to all bona fide residents of Kenya and those in the Kenya Missions abroad after making a formal application to KNEC six months before the year of examination.
KCSE Qualifying Test: Entry Requirements and Registration
Candidates wishing to sit for the KCSE Qualifying Test must meet specific entry requirements as stipulated by KNEC regulations. Eligible candidates include:
-
All persons with a primary certificate other than the KCPE, such as the Certificate of Primary Education (CPE).
-
All persons holding a foreign primary certificate obtained after fewer than eight years of primary education.
Registration Process
Registration for the test is conducted at the offices of the County Director of Education (CDE) between January and March.
Prospective candidates must present themselves at their respective CDE offices, which are responsible for managing the registration process.
The test will be administered online at a venue designated by the respective CDEs.
Students are advised to register for the Qualifying Test one year before they plan to register for the KCSE examination.
Heads of institutions with students requiring the Qualifying Test, especially those holding foreign or other equivalent primary school certifications, should apply for an Equation Letter from KNEC. This service is available online on the KNEC website.
