The Higher Educations Loans Board (HELB) has outlined a step-by-step process continuing students can use to apply for their subsequent loan applications using their mobile phone app.
In a statement on Monday, August 12, HELB said the app applies for both undergraduate and TVET subsequent applications.
“Applying for your Loan for the next academic year is simple. We have created this step-by-step guide to make it even simpler. Apply now,” HELB said.
To apply for HELB subsequent loan, the students should follow the ten steps described below
1.Download the HELB App from Google Play Store & register using your Safaricom phone number to generate activation code.
2.Create 4-digit pin that you will use to log in.
3.Confirm personal & Institutional details to proceed.
4.Click on the “Apply Subsequent Products” and swipe through the information provided till you get to “Get Started “tab.
5.Click on Loan application option.
6.Read and understand the Loan terms and conditions and agree to proceed.
7.Answer the financial literacy questions and click “proceed”.
8.Select your preferred loan payment option and verify to proceed.
9.Click request loan, review your loan details then hit “Submit”
10.Upon completion, you will see your loan serial number on both the App and SMS notification to confirm successful application.
HELB Undergraduate & TVET Subsequent Scholarship Application Via USSD
In addition, continuing students can also apply for loan and subsequent scholarship via USSD.
To use this method, applicants should dial *642# and select login option.
Afterwards, enter your PIN to login and select the Scholarship application option.
Applicants should then choose the application level (Degree or Diploma &Certificate), select academic year and confirm institutional details.
Proceed to click send and receive confirmation message with scholarship application serial number.
First Time Applicant
First time applicants should follow the process described below to apply for the HELB loan.
1.Visit the HELB website or hef.co.ke to access the Student Portal and click on “register” to create an account.
2.Enter your national ID number. However, an applicant can use their KCSE Index number if they don’t have a National ID.
3.Proceed to enter a valid email address and password and click “register”.
4.At this point, you have successfully created an account. Check your email (Inbox or Spam/ Junk) to activate the account and log in after email activation.

5.Enter a valid Telephone number where a verification code will be sent. If the verification code expires, click resend button to get a new verification code.
“You will be required to pay Ksh1000 from your MPESA account during the application process to verify your telephone number. Please note, the application is paperless hence no printing,” HELB explained.
6.After this, step, fill your profile and update your Biodata.
7.Give consent to collection of your personal data.
8.Read through the consent form to understand why HELB collects personal data then tick the checkbox to agree with terms of use.

9.Proceed to fill in your personal details then save to continue.
10.When all details are complete, submit your scholarship/loan request then consent to processing of your data by accepting the loan terms and conditions.
12.Also, ensure to update your guarantor details.
13.Provide loan payment information as per the fields provided (Bank or mobile payment)
13.Submit your loan application.
