The Inspector General of Police, Douglas Kanja has revealed when the Deputy Inspector General of Police, Eliud Lagat will step aside.
While speaking before the National Security Committee on Thursday, June 12, 2025, the DIG will step aside if he is adversely mentioned in the investigations into the death of Albert Ojwang.
“Any person whose name will be mentioned as having played any role in the death of Albert Ojwang’ must record their statement.
If the DIG is going to be mentioned, then on that basis, he will have to step aside to allow the completion of the investigation,” Kanja said.
Additionally, Kanja apologized to the Committee for the National Police Service’s rushed statement claiming that Albert Ojwang died by suicide after repeatedly hitting his head against a wall.
Kanja Says DIG Lagat Will Resign if IPOA Mentions His Name
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) boss, Mohamed Amin, who also accompanied the Inspector General during the committee session, denied that any preferential treatment was accorded to the Deputy Inspector General.
This was in response to questions about why Albert Ojwang and several bloggers accused by the DIG, who is the complainant, were arrested so quickly.
“There was no preferential treatment accorded to DIG Lagat. Like in all other cases, we always emphasise the need to expedite our investigations,” Amin said.

So far six police officers have been interdicted in relation to Albert Ojwang’s death. Their names are Chief Inspector Samson Talaam (Officer Commanding Station), Inspector Samuel Ng’ang’a (Duty Officer), Corporal Charles Muriuki, Police Constable Debian Lusweti, Police Constable Peter Kimani, and Police Constable Evaline Kanyiri.
IPOA Reveals Names of Officers Who Arrested Ojwang in Homa Bay
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) named five police officers involved in the arrest of Albert Ojwang at his home in Homa Bay County on June 7, 2025. The officers include:
- Sergeant Sigei
- Sergeant Wesley Kipkorir Kirui
- Police Constable Dennis Kinyoni
- Police Constable Milton Mwanze
- Police Constable Boniface Rabudo
Calls for Eliud Lagat to step aside and resign have also been growing, with leaders demanding his resignation since he was mentioned as a complainant in Ojwang’s case, which led to Ojwang’s death days after his arrest.

Ojwang was arrested on June 7 2025, in Homa Bay County, following a complaint by Lagat, who alleged that Ojwang posted defamatory content about him on social media, including accusations of corruption and involvement in a multi-million property purchase in Dubai.
These posts were deemed to tarnish Lagat’s reputation, prompting the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to obtain a warrant for Ojwang’s arrest. He was then transferred over 400 kilometers to Nairobi, where he died under suspicious circumstances.
