Five top-performing Kenyan university students have returned home after a weeklong immersive experience in China, where they took part in Huawei’s global flagship program, Seeds for the Future 2025.
Held from July 21 to 25, the program brought together exceptional students from across the world, including Brazil, Portugal, Namibia, and Madagascar, for advanced ICT training, innovation showcases, and cultural exchanges designed to nurture future tech leaders.
Representing Kenya were Shem Machii Ngunjiri (Dedan Kimathi University of Technology), Sophy Cherono Rop (United States International University–Africa), Huldah Mwihaki Kaura (Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology), Mungai Erick Gachuhi (Moi University), and Samuel Ochor Ogeno (University of Nairobi).
The students engaged in hands-on training in 5G, artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and smart city solutions through site visits to Huawei’s state-of-the-art exhibition halls, Longgang’s Smart Government Showcase, and drone manufacturer DJI’s global headquarters.

During the closing ceremony, participants were awarded certificates of completion. In a moving address, Ochor likened the journey to the growth of a seed.

“A seed starts in the dark, buried in the soil—unseen, uncertain, unimportant, but full of potential. With time, care, water, air, and the right environment, it sprouts, grows, and eventually becomes something impactful.”
Kaura echoed the sentiment, calling the opportunity “an unforgettable journey” that broadened their minds and deepened their understanding of how innovation can spark real-world change.
Now in its 11th year in Kenya, the Seeds for the Future program continues to build local capacity by offering students behind-the-scenes access to Huawei’s research and development centers, exposure to real-time tech applications, and global networking forums.
Michael Kamau, Huawei ICT Academy Manager, stated the program’s long-term impact.
“These bright minds represent the future of Kenya’s digital landscape. Through Seeds for the Future, we’re equipping them with the skills, global exposure, and networks they need to lead Africa’s tech-driven growth,” he stated.
