Mount Kenya University Launches First Private Maritime Academy in Kenya

Mount Kenya University (MKU) has established a Maritime Academy in Malindi, marking its first entry into maritime training.

The academy also stands out as the first non-government-sponsored institution in Kenya, dedicated to equipping students with the skills needed to thrive in the maritime industry. 

This privately funded training institution will fill a crucial gap by opening new doors for students seeking alternatives outside public institutions. 

Additionally, the shift will allow for increased enrollment, innovation, and an expanded curriculum catered to global maritime demands. 

Through the academy, MKU aims to revive the coastal region’s economy while providing youth with the necessary skills to tap into the lucrative opportunities within the Blue Economy.

Courses Maritime Academy Will Offer

According to the institution, the academy’s training programs are designed to support Kenya’s Blue Economy which is a government priority aimed at maximizing the sustainable use of ocean resources for economic growth, improved livelihoods, and job creation. 

The academy is structured to provide diplomas, degrees, and short courses, catering to different educational levels and professional needs. 

Furthermore, it offers affordable tuition the institution ensures that students from diverse backgrounds can benefit from maritime education.

The courses offered will focus on marine navigation, shipbuilding, fishing technology, marine conservation, and logistics.

MKU also mentioned that the courses will be tailored to meet global maritime standards, focusing on areas such as maritime safety, marine engineering, port management, and oceanography. 

Other Courses Mount Kenya University Academy Will Offer

Additional programs will focus on marine conservation and sustainable fishing practices, ensuring that students learn to maximize economic benefits from the ocean while also protecting the marine environment.

“The academy aims to produce graduates who are not only skilled but also environmentally conscious, capable of spearheading sustainable maritime ventures” read the statement in part.

“MKU Maritime Academy stands out for offering a dynamic, industry-relevant curriculum. We will ensure that the academy stays updated with the latest technologies and best practices in the maritime industry.

The institution added that the academy emphasizes the use of advanced technological tools in maritime training, including simulators for navigation and ship handling, as well as modern facilities for marine engineering and port logistics.

MKU Maritime Academy to Provide Jobs for Kenyans

The maritime academy is expected to generate employment opportunities for both staff and graduates.

Locally, it will engage teachers, administrative personnel, and other support staff.

For graduates, the academy provides the skills needed to secure jobs in the maritime sector, such as shipping companies, ports, and logistics firms. 

The academy will also provide the local youth in Malindi with training opportunities that align with the region’s rich maritime heritage, thus combating unemployment and offering new career paths. 

At the same time, the influx of students, faculty, and maritime businesses into Malindi will stimulate growth in local businesses and revive economic activity in the area. 

 The academy’s presence will further position Malindi as a maritime education hub, attracting students from across East Africa and potentially other regions, to foster cultural exchange and boost local tourism.
